Chapter 20

Kane arrived in Roanoke, Virginia, the next day, in her own car and took in the sights for a bit before stopping by the police department. The mountain town was once a hub, she could see. Population of less than a hundred thousand in the city proper, according to what she’d read, however, the city was also clearly dying. There were many closed buildings and businesses. People had that tight look that folks tended to get when they weren’t sure where the money to pay their bills was coming from.

She pulled into the town square, parked in front of the city police department, and smelled the fresh warm summer air once she got out. A couple of old-timers sat outside a barber shop, in the shade, and watched her from across the street.

She nodded to them. They didn’t acknowledge her, just smoked. Kane stared, then went on inside the city police department.
