Chapter 22

A month has passed since I arrived at Nightfall Academy.

I am acing all my classes and becoming stronger daily with my magic. My days are filled with learning about my magic, other classes- such as potions, healing, and history- and spending time with the guys. I am grateful for them every day. Theon, Chase, Carter, and Nox will help me study and work on my magic in their spare time. They also make it, so I am not so lonely. Sure, the second years seem to like me more than the first- well, expect Nova- but they still keep their distance.

Everything is going well, except that I am still having nightmares. Every night I will wake up screaming from them. I usually work on only a couple of hours of sleep every day. It doesn’t help that the nightmares make it hard to eat. I always feel nauseated by them. I know I have lost enough weight that it is noticeable now. I will catch Jace watching me during mealtimes. He will track how much I eat each time.

Speaking of Jace, besides the day in the male’s changing room, he has barely spoken to me. He isn’t avoiding me, per se, but he tends to become mute when I am around. He will still sit with us during mealtimes and hang out in the evenings, but he never says anything to me. He only watches me. He also avoids touching me at all costs now. Jace has also made a point to not spar with me during combat class.

The tugging sensation has only worsened. I can always tell when Jace is about to walk into a room from it. Anytime Jace does accidentally touch me, it feels like someone is taking a vice grip on my heart. I find myself absentmindedly rubbing my chest more and more to relieve the tension it causes. I still haven’t had time to research why I feel this way.

I ponder this while sitting in the library. I found the library after a week at the academy. I originally came here to find information about my parents. Which just like Ajax and Isabelle said, there is no mention of them anywhere. All the history books from seventeen years ago have been altered to remove their names from everything. Not even a single picture of the council exists from that time. Even though I found this insanely frustrating, the library still became my favorite place.

It is three stories, with every wall lined with bookshelves made from oak. Tables and chairs- made from the same oak- are spread throughout the ground level, with a spiral staircase in the middle leading to the other levels.

I am sitting on the third level in a small seating area tucked in the back corner, in front of a large window overlooking the lake. It is cozy up here, with the low lighting and rain pattering on the window. I find that not many come to the library. It is the one place I can slip away from the prying eyes.
