Chapter 52
The next few days passed in a blur.
Bill Harrison accepted a plea deal from the Anderson County District Attorney for the insider theft at Harrisonâs Drug Store. Unfortunately, the plea deal was nothing but a slap on the wrist, which outraged me.
Harrison only received one year of probation. But, the DA felt that since it was a non-violent crime, and since Harrison was an âoutstanding member of the business community,â according to him, he deserved to avoid jail time.
âPutting an older gentleman such as him in jail serves no point,â the DA told me. âHe needs to stay on the outside so he can work on his business and fix his finances. That was the true cause of his crime: fear and desperation. Not some kind of predatory, criminal instinct.â
Colette called it a classic good old boy deal, only offered up to Akinâs elite citizens, while Chief Bradbury tried to prevent me from overreacting.
âDonât worry about it, Danny,â Chief Bradbury said. âBill Harrison is going to be bankrupt in six months, if not sooner.â
I looked at him skeptically.
âAnd his arrest will be public record and all over the internet for the rest of his life. You did great work, Danny, and you canât expect every felon you arrest to end up behind bars. Our jails are overcrowded as it is, and this was merely a white-collar crime, unfortunately.â
I bit my tongue about my thoughts on white-collar crime. Bradbury could see I wasnât buying it and continued, âDanny, his wife spends like crazy, and heâs a lousy businessman. This isnât rocket science. His life is ruined, and heâll soon be bankrupt. Probably divorced, too, once the money spigot gets cut off.â
The chief was probably right there. I had some experience in the category of women, who cared heavily about status and money, leaving you.
In addition to the plea bargain with Harrison, Colette and I also made short work of Laura Tapperâs hit-and-run case. We confronted Boyd Jennings with the new information about the P.O. Box and informed him of our video evidence showing him delivering messages to her. He quickly shut up and retained an attorney, but ended up working out a deal and confessing.
It turned out that he would leave work every night and drop a message in a blank envelope for Laura Tapper, describing where and when they could hook up the next day. Boyd explained that they did it this way so thereâd be no electronic record of their meeting times.
But unfortunately, what began as a great and much needed affair for Boyd, soon grew out of control. Laura fell in love with him and wanted more than some fun on the side. She wanted Boyd to leave his wife, despite Boyd telling her when the affair began that such an event could never happen.
Boyd stated that Laura had become increasingly âcrazy,â and had threatened to inform Boydâs wife about their affair if he didnât leave her soon. Boyd had panicked and overreacted, hiring a hit-man to run her over as she walked to get her next message.
