Chapter twenty

Monster Colosseum

As it turned out, the airship was due to depart in just a few hours. Selene and I went back to the docks, where we were transported up to the ship high above. As we floated up into the air, I cast a long look at the island. How were my friends faring? I hadn't the faintest idea, and I wasn't going to know for quite some time.

Instead, as I reached the airship, I sat back and settled in as it made the long trip to the mainland.

The trip wasn't long, lasting several long hours where the Beast Master mostly stumbled around, inventing new objects and changing the names of various things. I sat back by the cage with Selene, listening to the thrum of the engine, and wishing that I was with the real Selene. I don't get nostalgic often, but… I don't know. Suddenly, I was remembering my old master all over again, longing for the day when I could slay the Admin for good. It wouldn't bring her back, but it'd sure make me feel a whole lot better.

Anyway, we soon arrived at the mainland, where the airship docked. We were taken down into the passages of the coliseum, until, finally, we were ready to enter.

I let out a long breath as I found myself just behind the grate, looking out into the empty arena. Blood was splattered across the walls, while cheering fans filled the seats. They wanted death and chaos, and they were going to get it. I drew in a deep breath, and patted Selene on the neck.

"Don't worry, girl." I murmured. "We're going to get through this alright."

Selene nodded, and suddenly, the grate rumbled upward. I slowly strode out, Legender at my side. I was utterly forbidden from using the weapon. My only tool in the arena was Selene. That was it.

As we walked out, I glanced around. There were twelve other creatures entering, several of which appeared rather formidable. I immediately pegged a large falcon as a threat, along with a gorilla. Finally, there was a large spider that was the size of a horse. If it managed to bite us, I knew that its venom was likely to be deadly, but as long as that could be avoided, we would likely be fine.

Other animals included a horse, several large insects (the size of a person, much smaller than the spider), and a smaller wolf. I let out a long breath as a circle lit up on the ground in front of us, and we came to a stop.

"Greetings, players!" The voice of the Beast Master rang out. "Most of you already know the rules, but here we go anyway! Monsters, try to protect your players while killing other monsters! Players, you may not use any sort of force to kill other monsters, unless reasonably defending yourself. Our guards will make the final call." I glanced up, where I found a handful of automatons holding sniper rifles. That didn't look good.
