The work with another client who was employed in the investment sector, gave me a brief insight into the operating logic of the financial world today.

Obsession with making money

In order to find out how he should best behave towards a business partner, the client selected me in the role of the fund manager with whom he was currently working. I had hardly taken my place when I raced through the room as if stung by a bee, with just one idea in my head: Have I made any large business transactions yet today? It didn’t matter what, but something had to happen today! I asked the client what he could suggest and he immediately produced some ideas: diamond mines in Africa, currency speculation on the Japanese yen, commodity trading in Brazil... I egged him on to suggest more ideas because something big had to happen today. His excuse that at the moment our big money deal was threatening to fall through, didn’t interest me in the slightest in my role. Then an even bigger deal would have to be found to offset this loss. Gradually his concern became annoying and I demanded to talk to a contact partner on a higher management level of the financial institution. We ended the constellation at this point in order to think about what had taken place.

The client I was working with here had not had a pleasant childhood. His mother had committed suicide when he was 12. The speculation business was something outwardly exciting, which allowed him to feel slightly less of his inner chaos.
