Chapter Sixteen

Unlike the first time she crossed a portal just days ago, this trip didn’t land her in the middle of a silent compound devoid of life. This portal dumped her in the middle of a fucking firefight. “For fuck’s sake! Obsidian, to me!”

Her gargoyle partner was just as surprised to jump into the middle of a fight, but they’d both been trained in the Gargoyle Legion. They knew how to fight as a team. He galloped back to her side, offering her his back.

Anna leaped upon him, and together she and her gargoyle mount darted across the wide field and toward what looked like an abandoned warehouse. The tall grass hid some of the bodies, but Obsidian leaped and darted around anything in his path, cutting across the field at a ninety-degree angle to get them out of the line of fire as swiftly as possible.

“Remind me to curse out your sister next time I see her!”

“She couldn’t have known she was dropping us in the middle of a battle,” Obsidian answered as bullets and RPGs whizzed past them. Spears of enemy magic and volleys of fireballs arched through the air, but nothing hit them.

“Are you able to use your shadow magic?”

His large, deer like ears poked out of his thick mane, and he gave her a sharp nod. “I’m recovered enough for that.”

“Good. We’re going to need it.”

Obsidian tore across the meadow, heading for a line of trees halfway to the abandoned warehouse while Anna clung to his back. The tree trunks and underbrush provided cover. But perhaps there was something Anna could do to help.

Closing her eyes, she reached deep, calling to that magic that had been so eager to overpower her before Gregory had repaired her vessel. She hadn’t felt it so much as stir since she’d awakened from her healing, but now it awoke and rushed outward just as eagerly as she remembered. It swiftly homed in on the nearest enemy.

“Let’s not scramble my brain like what happened to Obsidian’s last time,” she told the magic. “Gregory might not have enough power to put us back together. Hell, he might be in such awful shape, it will be us trying to fix him. So don’t get us killed.”

Her new magic seemed to almost nod in agreement.

Too fucking weird.

But there was no time to worry about her peculiar magic. Battle awaited.

Her magic picked out its first target, shaping generous amounts of power into a long, deadly silvery-blue spear. As if under the control of another, Anna’s arm launched the javelin at the enemy.

Magic swirled around her body in a way it never had before, and Anna had a sinking feeling that was because the power was leveling up. But it was already so powerful. How could she hope to control it if it continued to grow in strength? And clearly, it had a will of its own.

‘Mind on the task at hand,’ Anna reminded herself, tightening her legs around Obsidian’s sides. ‘Win the battle first, rescue the Avatar and the Null, and then worry about the willful magic later.
