22: The Pantry

Brother Artemis wheezed with every step he was forced to take. His chest constricted with every breath he could manage to pull into his lungs. Every muscle in his legs screamed in protest. But there wasn’t any stopping even if he wanted to. Being dragged along by two guards meant that Brother Artemis was going to go wherever they took him, whether he wanted to or not.

To the best of his understanding, they were fleeing the house that Eileen had thrown him into, and making their way to the College of Story and Song to seek refuge from the plague walkers who had infiltrated the city. He wondered why they couldn’t just stay in their current house since it was plague walker free, but he was in no condition to argue. He was literally being dragged through the streets of Black Dog without being able to put up much of a protest. He was, in fact, protesting all of it, because there wasn’t anything he could do to change his circumstances.

The suns were beginning to rise up over the horizon, and the light they brought with them didn’t spark any sense of hope or survival within Brother Artemis. Instead, the light of the suns showed how much devastation the plague walkers’ destruction had caused. Bodies lay strewn through the streets. Not plague walkers bodies, but bodies of the residents. Brother Artemis averted his eyes from the gruesome sight as they continued to run. He and his two guards were following Eileen. She made sure the alleyways were free of the monsters before they continued onward. They had to backtrack a few times to avoid a roaming group of the creatures and twice they hid in another alleyway to let a group pass.

Brother Artemis had watched Eileen destroy plague walkers with her potions before. She must have used up her store of vials.

“This way!” she shouted as the last group of plague walkers ran by, and they continued on.

Brother Artemis could see the college’s towers and walls rising up over the buildings ahead of them. They had made it. Perhaps they could seek refuge after all. Then he saw the army.

If the plague walkers had been roaming the streets of Black Dog in small groups, it looked like most of them had decided to attack the city center. Brother Artemis could see a wall and a gate around the college, but at every point, plague walkers were attempting to scale it or to bash it in. The gate to the college was being assaulted by the majority of the creatures. It certainly didn’t look like there was anything they could do to get inside now. The defenders had already closed themselves in. They were trapped outside.

“Quick. In here,” Eileen said as she guided them into another alleyway, and they all took a much-needed breather.

Brother Artemis was glad to see that the others were also breathing heavily. But he was the only one who fell down to his knees. He
