Add a Cup of Terror

Michael Spence & Elisabeth Waters

Decades after we met in high school, Michael and I are still collaborating on the “Treasures of Albion” stories. As usual, this was inspired by a verse from Psalms:

I am in misery, and like unto him that is at the point to die *

even from my youth up thy terrors have I suffered with a troubled mind.

Psalm 88, verse 15

From this I came up with the idea of another anti-Treasure, more or less the opposite of the Holy Grail. The working title was “The Cup of Terror,” but Michael had a better idea.

Michael Spence is a writer, proofreader, and voice talent living in the Lesser White North. (He hasn't yet seen the prodigious Wall separating Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Montana from Canada, but figures it must be there.) Besides his stories and collaborations in Sword and Sorceress, he has written on Harlan Ellison and time for Sci Phi Journal, on astrotheology for Music of Darkover, and on eschatology, quantum mechanics, and superheroes for Realms of Darkover. Celebrated SF authors Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchins have included his comedy sketches in their podcasts, calling them "@#$%&! brilliant." The steampunk stories "Why the Sea Is Boiling Hot" and "Ignem in Terram" have been podcast on Tales from the Archives: the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences and are also available in print; "Why the Sea Is Boiling Hot" was chosen as a finalist for the Parsec Award. Michael's bits and essays on SF, Christianity, and the interface between the two can be found on his website at michaelspence.us.
