âSeriously? I finally get to meet them?â Darlene plopped down on top of her bed at the B&B. She gave Dixie a skeptical look. âAre they going to show up this time? Or am I going to wind up at someone elseâs ranch?â She was beginning to think the men didnât really exist.
Dixie scoffed at her. âOf course theyâll be there. Yes, I know. Itâs been hard as hell to get you three together, but things have been crazy at the ranch. Cattle getting out, horses getting sick. Theyâve hardly had time to see me, much less to meet you. I mean I didnât want you to meet them when they were all sweaty and stinky from working the herd.â
Darlene didnât doubt her. Dixie was a big believer in first impressions. She always set up meetings with boyfriends with all the details planned in advance. The bigger the show of an introduction, the better. The time, the setting, even the way the man was dressed was all choreographed down to the smallest detail. Her sister shouldâve become an event planner.
âBesides, youâve been kind of busy, too. Why didnât you tell me you went to the bar again last night?â
She wasnât about to tell Dixie what had happened. It was bad enough that the townâs gossip mill had already outed her for going to the bar again. Had they mentioned Weston? She hoped not. âIt was an impromptu thing.â
Once again, Dixie proved she was a smart woman. âYou met someone there, didnât you?â Her sister hopped onto the bed beside her. âOh, my God. Was it the same guy? Did you hook up with your hookup guy?â
âIâm not saying a word.â Especially not hookup. Weston was no way a hookup. He was more than that. At least, she hoped he was. To think of him as only a booty call would be like insulting him. Besides, why did she need to say anything when the gossipers in town would more than likely do it for her? Plus, this time she was going to play her sisterâs game. The longer she kept Weston a secret, the better. She and her sister needed to focus on one thing and one thing only. Getting Dixieâs men checked out.
âYou know what this means, donât you?â
She paused, not sure she wanted to know. âIt doesnât mean anything.â
Which, of course, was a flat-out lie. But had their time together meant anything to Weston? Heâd yet to call her.
âOf course it does. It means heâs not a hookup.â
I sure hope not.
Still, she wasnât about to admit it. âNo, it doesnât. People have relationships that are based entirely on being booty calls.â She tried to act as though the idea didnât bother her, but it did. Was she just a booty call for Weston? Her stomach churned to think she might be.
âBut not you. Not this time.â
Their conversation was going nowhere. At least, nowhere she wanted it to go. She had to change the subject. âSo when am I supposed to show up? And donât forget to give me good directions.
