I hit send and have another sip of coffee. Damn, what is it about Barbara’s coffee that is so good? I can detect a mixture of spices brewed into it, and it’s so tasty.
It’s warm. Comforting.
Much like Barbara herself.
AJ is typing …
I’m going to video call you. Hold on.
I set the coffee mug back down and wait for his call to come through. When I see it, I tap on it, and AJ’s handsome face fills my phone screen.
“How are you feeling?” AJ asks, grinning at me.
Heat burns my cheeks. “Physically? Hungover. Emotionally? Embarrassed I sent you that video.”
“That,” AJ says, a gleam coming into his deep green eyes, “was hilarious.”
“I can’t even blame being drunk, because I wasn’t at that point. Everything I said was true. I was trying to be funny at first and loosen Addison up about doing a video for online dating. Then I got all mushy about you.”
AJ’s expression softens. “That was my favorite part about the video.”
My heart holds still. “Yeah?”
“It’s nice that you missed me,” he says. “I’ve never had that before.”
Now my heart is fluttering.
AJ is silent for a moment, simply staring at the screen, and I wish I knew what he was thinking.
“I miss you, Katie,” he says softly. “I’m used to being on my own. I’m used to hanging with the guys, going place to place, and I’ve always been good with that, but I found myself missing you last night.”
I smile. “You know I miss you.”
He grins. “And it wasn’t all wine-induced?”
“Nope,” I say.
“How hungover are you?” AJ asks, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Swoon.
“Very. But I have coffee and cake thanks to Barbara; I’m coming to life. How are you this morning?”
“Good. Waiting on room service. Then I’m going to take a walk around Michigan Avenue. It’s always weird to be here. This is one of the cities that was part of my growing up tour. Spent eight months here. I was a freshman in high school, and we lived in the north suburbs. This was the one place I begged my parents to stay. I loved it here. I was on a good team, I was just starting high school. We left in April. That’s when I vowed not to get attached to any—”
A knock on the door interrupts AJ.
“Room service,” a female voice calls out.
“Coming,” AJ replies. “I’ve got to eat. I’ll call you back, okay?”
I nod. “I’ll be here eating cake.”
AJ flashes me a wicked grin. “Watch those crumbs. But I know your bra has your back on that one.”
I blush furiously, and he laughs as he disconnects.
As soon as he’s gone, my mind goes back to what he was saying before the room service person knocked on the door. How he vowed to never get attached. He didn’t finish his sentence, but it doesn’t matter if it was anyone or anything. Whatever he got attached to it, it was taken away from him.
I know missing me is a huge thing for him to feel, and my heart is elated by that fact.
