CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Michelle was living abroad, but her parents had sent her to a boarding school in England. Her parents owned a successful and thriving restaurant. Andrea’s father was a small-time hotelier in the same harbour area. He had invested wisely in property and soon his portfolio had grown, which was when he developed the Destiny Luxury Group. Both Michelle's and Andrea's fathers rose in prominence within the local business council in that community. Andrea's father took on the role of chair of the business council, while Michelle's father was his deputy. The bond grew over time, but Andrea’s family returned to the UK. The families stayed in touch. Although not that close to Andrea when they lived abroad, things changed when both sets of parents sent their children to the same boarding school in Devon. At eleven, Andrea and Michelle found themselves reunited not only in the same school, but also in the same dormitory. A significant moment in their lives as it was their formative years and the transitional time into womanhood. They had similar academic and sporting interests. They were both selected for the school hockey team, where Michelle exhibited a more aggressive take on tackling. Forever being warned about raising her stick too high and deliberate tripping, Mrs Granger, the PE teacher, put that down to Michelle’s enthusiasm. If you were on the end of one of her hockey stick swipes, you may not have had such a benevolent view.

The librarian always knew where to find her when closing the library at 6pm. Andrea would have her head buried deep in to one of the literary classics, whether it be Shakespeare, Wordsworth or her favourite, Chekhov. Even more remarkable, considering that English literature was not even considered one of her strongest subjects. Technology and Business Studies were where she excelled. Michelle, on the other hand, was more laissez-faire for extra-curricular studies. As the school bell went, and the slamming of desk lids echoed throughout the halls, Michelle would be one of the first out of the door. Back to the dormitory and a quick change of clothes into something far more comfortable. Never waiting for Andrea to return to the dormitory, instead she would be off to the school canteen to get in the queue early for dinner. It ran from 4.30pm until last orders at 6.30pm. She would never be there at just gone 6pm to see Andrea scurrying into the canteen. Michelle would more often than not be in the most remote ladies’ toilets with her head over the toilet bowl, trying to force herself to throw up. She wanted to remain slender. If she could pinch an inch of fat anywhere on her body, it impelled her to go back to the toilets and try to make a better job of inducing the vomiting. With Michelle’s personal friendships
