Chapter Twelve
We were less than a week away from the wedding, and I was surprised at how much Christy had handled on her own. I was thrilled about it, too, because she was taking a lot of stress off of me. I planned on taking the day before my wedding to spend with my bridesmaids, Amanda and Christy, and my mother. It wasnât a large wedding party, and that was nice because we were going to get our hair and nails done, and then we were going to go out to lunch. Just a fun girlsâ day before the wedding.
âMia, what are you doing back in this candy store?â Mom asked me as she opened the back of the display case. She had a tray of candy corn fudge in one hand, and she pulled out an empty tray with the other.
I shrugged. âChristy has done so much of the wedding preparation for me, that I donât have a lot left to do. Iâm sure Iâll start panicking the day before, but for right this minute, Iâm fine.â
âItâs been my pleasure,â Christy said, leaning against the counter.
âThat candy corn fudge smells heavenly.â I looked over Momâs shoulder at the tray.
She smiled. âWould you like a piece?â
I nodded. âI would love a piece.â
She got a piece of wax paper from behind the front counter, cut a small piece of fudge, and handed it to me. âChristy?â
Christy nodded. âI would love some.â
She cut a piece for Christy and then put the rest of the fudge into the display case. âHow is Ethan doing?â she asked me.
âHeâs working overtime on the case, but he promised me he would take the day before the wedding off, and rest and relax. Not that Iâm going to get to see him that day since weâre going to get our nails done and go out to lunch. But Iâll see him at the rehearsal and dinner.â
She nodded. âI canât wait. Itâll be nice just having a day with you girls.â
âMe too,â Christy said. âI havenât gotten my nails and hair done in forever, and Iâm looking forward to it.â
Mom patted her on the shoulder. âIâm going back to the kitchen to see what Linda is working on. Sheâs been doing a great job learning to make the fudge and marshmallows.â
I nodded. âThatâs great. That means we can all take vacations at the same time and trust that the candy store is going to be fine.â
Mom chuckled as she headed back to the kitchen. âI donât know if Iâd go that far just yet.â
âSoon,â Christy called after her.
The candy store door opened, and Pastor Phillips walked in. He smiled when he saw us. âWell, how are you two ladies doing today?â
âWeâre doing great,â I said. âHow are you? And how are things going with the new church?â
He nodded and came up to the front counter, leaning on it. âThe insurance is going to send us a check, and weâve been looking into what we can do to replace the old church.
