Mac drummed his fingers. Finally, Bryce called to tell him all he discovered. âI am sure Jason Weller and his friends had nothing to do with the murder of Shelly Hughes.â He related the events as they had unfolded. âSomeone got the messages mixed up, and when the one boat finally went to the landmark to pick her up, she wasnât there. Iâve talked to every one of them. There is nothing that stands out as suspicious from them. They are all very upset over how things turned out.â
âCome on back to the precinct, Bryce. Bring a list of everyone youâve talked to. We may need one or two later.â
Detective Jones heard the frustration in his father-in-lawâs voice. So far, there were no viable suspects.
Macâs phone rang again. âThe cause of death was antifreeze being forced down the victimâs throat,â the coroner said.
Mac called Brenda and asked her to meet him at the boat rental business. Mac asked Jonathan to gas up his motorboat. When he and Brenda arrived, Jonathan had the boat ready for them. Mac started the motor and told Brenda they were going to the Beacon Lighthouse.
Once docked, he told her the manner of death. Mac wasnât convinced the victim had been killed at the landmark. Where would anyone find antifreeze there? The grounds appeared well-kept.â
âDonât forget the far edge of the property that has debris on it,â Brenda said. âLetâs see what was discarded there.â
âIâm surprised they havenât cleared that out yet.â Mac kept pace with his wife.
âI think itâs next on the list for the caretakers. The weather didnât cooperate, so they worked on the inside of the lighthouse.â
Two officers were back at the landmark. They slowly canvassed the west side of the grounds. Mac and Brenda approached the northwest corner of the property. Several empty bottles were heaped in the middle of brush and other discarded items. Brenda picked up a long stick and began to part the items. The stick broke as she went deeper into the pile. Mac handed her a stronger one. The two of them dug further.
âSomething has been put in here recently,â Brenda said. âThe loose dirt indicates it.â
She felt her stick hit something hard. Brushing the dirt and debris away, she saw a container that read âantifreeze.â Mac handed her gloves. Brenda pulled the jug out and opened the lid. The liquid reached to approximately three inches below the lid.
Mac looked in. âThe coroner told me she had more than enough in her to kill her. This was overkill.â
The detective motioned for one of the officers to bring an evidence bag over. They placed the jug into it. Mac asked if they had found anything else of interest.
âWe found a sandal. It looks fairly new. We havenât found the other one yet.â
âIâm sure itâs somewhere out in the ocean,â Brenda said. âShe was killed here. Then her body was taken out to sea and dumped. The killer or killers didnât count on the currents shifting the body to land rather than farther out.
