Thirty-two-year-old Will Peters was a high school teacher in Silver Cove. The man had a medium build, brown hair, blue eyes, and an easy-going manner. Angie, Jenna, and Chief Martin met him in his classroom at the high school in the late afternoon. They all pulled the student chairs into a small circle and sat down.

Chief Martin made introductions and offered their condolences to the teacher. “I know you were no longer together, but it is still very hard to lose someone you were close to.”

Will blinked a few times and took in a deep breath. “Thank you. It did hit me hard. I guess I harbored some hope we might get back together. Foolish, I suppose, but it had only been a few months since we’d broken up.”

“What was the cause of the breakup?” the chief questioned.

“To tell you the truth, I thought Madison and I would get married. I guess I really didn’t read the relationship well because I was shocked when she told me she wanted to end it. She hadn’t been answering my texts for about a week. When I called, the conversation was brief. Madison said she was having a very busy week. Finally, we met for drinks and she lowered the boom on me.”

“Did she give a reason for ending it?”

Will’s voice was hoarse when he answered. “Because we weren’t a good match. That was news to me.”

“Do you think she was seeing someone else?”

Will looked down at the desktop. “I don’t think so. She was seeing someone else when she died, but I think that started up after our breakup. Madison was a hard-driving woman. I’m sure you’ve heard all this already. I’m more laid back. I like to hike, cycle, sail. I love my work, but I want to enjoy my life, too. I think balance is important. Madison didn’t agree.” The man sighed. “Maybe she was right. Maybe we weren’t the right match. But I’ll tell you, I thought we complemented each other well. Apparently, I was the only one who thought so.”

“How did you take it when she told you she didn’t want to continue the relationship?” Chief Martin asked.

“I was hurt, really hurt. Then I felt angry and confused. How did I think we had a future together? How could I be so wrong? I felt dumb. I started to believe I couldn’t read people. It gave my confidence a real punch in the stomach. Was I deluding myself the entire time we were together? Was I hoping so much that Madison was the one for me that I only saw what I wanted to see? Do I not know myself at all? Did I not know her at all? I did a lot of soul-searching.”

Angie spoke up. “Did you notice anything different about Madison? You mentioned that things were off the week before she broke things off, but how about before that? Had she changed when you were together? Was she quieter? Worried about anything?”

Will’s face was serious. “When I look back, I can see she’d started to pull away about a month before she ended it.
