I yawn and recline back against the seat. “How long is this going to take?”

“As long as it takes.” David scans Betty’s house through his binoculars. “She’s still in the sunroom. She’s been there all morning.”

“Do we really have to sit here all day?” I moan. “Isn’t there anything we can do—anything at all?”

“You can play Tetris on your phone for all I care. I’ll keep an eye on her.”

I groan and roll my eyes. This is the most boring neighborhood in the world. What was I thinking agreeing to this stake-out? I’m really not cut out for sleuthing. When am I going to realize that?

I’m just about to get out my phone like he says when he sits up straight in his seat. “Hello. She’s on the move.”

“What?” I blink the dust out of my eyes. “Where?”

I don’t have to ask. Betty comes out of her house and gets in her car. She drives toward town. David crawls after her at a safe distance and we watch her park in front of the Happy-Go-Lucky Café.

“What’s she doing?” I whisper.

“She’s going inside. Oh, look. The Johnsons are here, too.”

“No!” I gasp. “What if they’re meeting her?”

“We don’t know that. It could just be a coincidence.”

“How could it be?” I ask. “Who goes to a café at ten-thirty on a Monday morning? They must be meeting her.”

“Now don’t jump to conclusions,” he tells me. “Just because they’re….”

I grab the door handle. “I’m going in there.”

He shoots out a hand to grab me. “You can’t! You’ll tip them off.”

“If it’s just a coincidence that they all came here at ten-thirty in the morning, then it’s just a coincidence that I came here at ten-thirty in the morning. This is our best chance to find out what they’re up to and if they’ve got something going with Betty on the side. For all we know, all three of them plotted to kill Florence.”

He scowls at me. “You better be careful.”

“I’ll text you if anything happens.”

I hop out of the car and race for the café. When I get to the front counter, I spot Betty sitting down at a booth with the Johnsons. My heart leaps. This is too good to be true. So they do have something going on the side.

Stacy scurries over. “What can I do for you?”

“I’ll just have a cup of coffee. Could I have that table over there?” I point to the spot adjacent to their booth. A large indoor rubber tree hides the two tables from each other.

I eased into my place and cuddled my coffee cup when Betty’s voice comes to me from behind the rubber tree. “We had a deal. You can’t back out on it now.”

“You’re the one who ruined the deal, Betty,” Cedric fires back. “You screwed us over by listing a house that wasn’t for sale. You cost us a lot of money. Now you have to pay it back.”

“I don’t have to pay it back if you buy the house,” she replies.
