âWell, Iâm glad Iâve got a double shot eggnog latte for this one.â Steele shakes her head, exasperated. âSo let me get this right, his grand hypothesis is that supposed bunny-boiler Saskia French might have sent Alice Lapaine to his house to deliver a message because heâd stopped taking her calls and blocked her everywhere?â
âItâs a bit teenage,â I say. âShe seemed perfectly capable of fighting her own battles to me.â
Christmas Eve. Itâs not even seven a.m. and thereâs already a few of us clamoring for space around Steeleâs electric heater, thawing out our limbs while trying to get our heads around this mindfuck of a case.
âOi, budge over.â Parnell nudges me with his hip. âYou forget Iâm older than you, Kinsella. An Arctic chill could finish me off.â I laugh. âItâs true, I saw a poster in the doctorâs.â
At least Parnellâs trying to be funny. Renée and Flowers clearly havenât had their Weetabix yet if their moods are anything to go by.
âSo what does this Saskia say about it?â grunts Flowers.
I wouldnât know. Parnell insisted on dropping me home on the way back from the Hicksesâ last night, which left him with the happy task of wrangling with Saskia again and me to a night of ânormal stuffââas coined by the woman herself.
Washing. Tidying. Microwaving. Dodging phone calls from my sister.
Starting to write out Christmas cards before deciding itâs nearly Christmas anyway and whatâs the point.
With the exception of Parnell, of course. My work-dad gets a card depicting a glittery robin perched on an equally glittery branch. Heâs already moaning that heâs covered in the bloody stuff.
âWhat did Saskia say?â repeats Parnell, blowing hot breath into his glittery hands. âWell, in between saying that Forensics were âtaking fucking libertiesâ and stressing about having to pack to go to her parentsâ today, she confirmed, yes, they were having an affair but no, she didnât send anyone to the house.â
âAlice could have gone to the Hicksesâ under her own steam.â I suggest. âMaybe she found out about the affair with Saskia and decided to blackmail Nate Hicks. We know she needed money.â
âWhich gives him motive to kill her,â says Flowers, stating the bleeding obvious.
Steele doesnât look too excited. âYeah, OK, maybe it does, but itâs just thatâa maybe. Weâve got no proof whatsoever that Maryanne had any knowledge of Saskia and Nateâs affair. And also, why blackmail him? There canât have been a shortage of married men frequenting that flat with guilty consciences and deep pockets. Why pick on the lover of your newfound flatmate? Doesnât make sense.â
âMaybe Saskia put her up to it and they were going to share the spoils?â I say.
âAnother âmaybeâ but that one sits a bit better.â Steele chews her lip, twists the holder on her coffee cup. âDevilâs advocate, but what do we think about Saskia French as a suspect? She didnât report her missing, thatâs dodgy, surely?â
Parnellâs open to it. âWe said we couldnât completely rule out a woman. And sheâs statuesque enough.â
âAlibi?â croaks Renée.
