âAre we going to take the gear with us?â asked Caro. âYou know, the cameras and stuff.â
Michaela hesitated, thinking about it, then shook her head. âNot tonight. Weâll go back in the morning with it, if we need to. Right now, all I want to do is make certain that Celia and Mandy are all right.â
They piled into the car, leaving a bemused Mack to guard the house. Michaela drove, fingers tapping on the steering wheel as she worried about what they would find. It was late enough that the town was deserted as they drove down the main street and headed up the hill towards Celiaâs house.
Caro leaned forward in the back seat. âWhat did Calista say about Celiaâs séance?â
âThat she was worried about it,â Michaela answered. âThat it sounded to her like there was some sort of struggle going on and that Celiaâs grandmother was trying to stop someone else from coming through.â She subsided into silence.
âBut who else would be trying to make contact?â Caro persisted.
Michaela shrugged. âThatâs what we have to find out, I guess.â
âIf Sylvia didnât want them to come through, why though? Because theyâre dangerous in some way?â
Michaela didnât answer and they drove the rest of the way without talking.
The lights were off in Celiaâs house when Michaela pulled into the driveway. They sat looking up at the house for a moment, then Michaela unbuckled her seatbelt and got out.
âMaybe theyâve gone away somewhere,â sad Trisha.
Michaela wiped her sweaty hands on her jeans. âI hope so,â she said. âI guess we should go find out.â
They walked up the path to the veranda and stood in a knot at the door. Michaela bit her lip, peering at the dark house through the glass. Finally, she rang the bell and they all jumped when the chimes echoed back at them.
There was no movement.
Michaela rang the bell a second time. Still no answer. She tried the door but it was locked. âMaybe they have gone away. Surely Mandy at least would have called to tell us though?â She cupped her hands around her eyes and looked into the house again. No one moved in there.
This time she knocked on the door, sharp rappings with her knuckles. âCelia!â she called. âItâs Michaela, open the door.â Her voice was shockingly loud in the still night air. She looked at Trisha and shrugged. âLetâs look around,â she said. âMaybe one of the other doors is open.â
Trisha nodded. âThereâs a door off the kitchen, isnât there?â
âYeah, and one on the other side of the house, leading to the patio. But you canât get to that one unless you want to climb up a bank and over the fence.â
âPersephone and Iâll do that,â Caro said.
Michaela nodded. âOkay. Do you have your torch?â
Caro looked confused.
âFlashlight, I mean,â Michaela elaborated.
Nodding, Caro held it up and flicked it on.
âGood enough,â Michaela said. âWeâll try the kitchen door. Yell if you need us. And be careful, the last thing we need are any broken legs or necks.
