Angie worked the counter at her second bake shop in the Sweet Cove Art Museum. Initially, she’d been unsure about opening the satellite location, but it did very well with staff and visitors to the museum, and financially, it had exceeded her expectations. The museum was an impressive building and the bake shop was located in the center lobby which acted as the hub of the place with hallways heading off to the different galleries. There were planters around the bake shop’s seating area that spilled over with flowers and greenery providing a quiet, attractive spot for a beverage, soup, salad, sandwich, or sweet.

“Hey, there, Angie.” A woman in her sixties who volunteered at the museum came up to the counter. Elizabeth Wilkins and her husband had started and run a tech company and were bought out for tens of millions. After selling the business, Elizabeth wanted to devote herself to community service, and she kept busier than when she was working.

“Hi, Elizabeth. I didn’t know you’d be here today.”

“They asked if I could come in. There’s some paperwork that needs to get finished. I’m happy to do it.” She ordered an iced coffee and the strawberry and cheesecake French toast, and took a seat on one of the stools at the granite counter. “Can you believe what happened to Wendy Tillman and her son? The poor woman, and her poor son. He was so young. I have a hard time wrapping my head around it.”

“It’s a horrible tragedy.” Angie carried the coffee cup over and set it in front of the woman. “I didn’t know either one, but people speak highly of both of them.”

“It’s a terrible loss for the community.” Elizabeth took a sip from her cup. “What do you make of it? Mafia? Gang-related? Someone with a fierce grudge? A love triangle?”

“Murder is often the result of love or money issues.” Angie placed the French toast on a white plate before delivering it to Elizabeth.

“No surprise there.”

“The motive could be any one of those things, or a combination.” Angie shrugged.

“Do you think it might have been a kidnapping for ransom? Then something went wrong, and the abductor killed them?”

“I have not heard that Brian Tillman received a ransom request.”

“It must have been some sort of rage thing,” Elizabeth mused. “Someone infuriated over some perceived slight or mistreatment. Is Brian a suspect?”

“The police always look at the family members.”

“Yes. Imagine if Brian did it? Or Samantha? It would be a shock to hear the husband or daughter had something to do with it. Maybe a jealous work colleague, or maybe an unrequited love interest, or a friend who ended up not being a friend.”

“Did you know Wendy?” Angie asked.

“I knew her from charity events and from business events in Boston. Our paths crossed every so often, when Jack and I were still involved with our company. She was a lovely person, very generous with her time and advice. I didn’t know Andrew. We did meet the young man once or twice though.
