“Bubbelah!” Golda Lawrence exclaimed on the front door step, pulling her oldest son into a warm hug. Jacob allowed himself to bend, closing the difference of nearly a foot in height between them, as Golda hissed into his ear. “It’s like a funeral in there – thank goodness you’ve arrived, I’m not sure how much more of it I can stand!” Straightening up, she said loudly, “Come in, come in, the Sonbergs are here for tea, and Adina with them. Isn’t that lovely.” She shot him a significant look. Jacob stifled his desire to laugh out loud.

He stepped into the sitting room to be greeted with an air of hostile emotion.

Esther Sonberg, who had been sitting on the couch beside Jacob’s younger brother Michael, stood up abruptly, and came to him with a plaintive expression.

“Is there nothing you can do to convince our Adina to stay at home with us, Jacob?” she asked. “How will I know if she is alright? Why one of Donald Pinzolo’s khazers could murder her in her sleep and we wouldn’t even know!”

“I think it’s best if she goes into protective custody,” Jacob said. “Just to be sure. Even in jail, Pinzolo has connections that could cause trouble, and your address is on public record.” He shot a look at Adina, who shrugged in exasperation.

“Ah!” Esther threw her arms in the air dramatically. “Why should we care for our own safety, when our only daughter could be killed at any moment? It is her that we are worried sick about - perhaps we should all go into hiding, to keep an eye on her.” She was almost hysterical now, her normally dignified composure frayed at the seams.

“She’s less conspicuous on her own, Mrs. Sonberg.” Jacob turned to Adina’s father. “As a retired associate justice, you know only too well what these people are capable of,” he appealed. “She’s far safer hidden with one of our own.”

Amos Sonberg nodded, gravely.

“I still don’t like it though,” he growled. “Pinzolo has had his hand on the shoulder of the commissioner for a long time. Distancing himself now from Mayor Sutherland doesn’t change that fact. Who knows if one of his cronies will talk. Pinzolo may be locked up but, –”

“That’s why I’ve arranged to hide her out of the system,” Jacob interrupted. “She’ll be with a personal friend of mine. Someone I trust implicitly.”

Esther’s ears pricked up. “And who is this man? That doesn’t sound appropriate –”

“That doesn’t matter anymore, Ima!” Adina said. “Besides –”

“It’s an old friend of mine,” Jacob cut in. He shot a look to Adina, shaking his head almost imperceptibly. “Someone who can protect her better than I ever could.”

Adina raised an eyebrow but stayed quiet.

Hovering by the empty fireplace, Golda and Abraham Lawrence exchanged a quizzical look. Golda stepped forward, her dark hair glinting under the low chandelier.

“An old friend?” she probed. “Do we know him?”

On the far couch, Michael cleared his throat and jumped to his feet.

“Goodness, well, I’m starved!” he blurted. Everybody turned and looked at him, startled.
