Chapter Seventeen

Cheek Kisses

Sergeant Spears hadn’t changed. He was more concerned with his piles of paperwork than patrolling the streets. The two weeks dragged by. I knew the Sergeant had to work on admin stuff, but it didn’t make things easier on me. I missed the excitement of Spike, even if I frequently wanted to strangle him.

The two weeks finally came to an end, and it was time to work with Benito. He had the same shift times on different nights of the week. This gave me one day off before I was on shift again.

“So, Ivy, you ready to see how real police work is done?”

I hoped he was joking. “As ready as I’ll ever be.” I was discovering that officers thought their way was always best. The only person outside this norm was Alex.

To my surprise, we didn’t head out to stop vehicles. The next two hours were spent going over officer safety during traffic stops. Benito used one of our unmarked vehicles to show me what the driver could see and not see. I could tell Benito loved life as a traffic hound. He also knew his stuff. He told me what a driver expected from a cop and what a cop should always expect from a driver.

It was simple in his mind and like Spike’s discouraging warning, expect death. He didn’t have a numbered list of rules like Spike, but he knew danger was a part of every stop. We went over safety until he finally felt I was ready to hit the road.

He had me pull over vehicles for every infraction imaginable: not using a turn signal, not stopping completely at a stop sign, and the traffic cops’ favorite, no license plate light. I wasn’t even sure if my personal vehicle had a license plate light. I had never checked.

“When I have time, I stop multiple vehicles for not having their license plate lit up,” he explained. “I land DUIs this way. Attorneys love calling foul on the reason for the stop, but I can pull multiple people over for the same infraction and they are not drunk. My paperwork shows it.”

I learned so much during my three days with Benito. It was nice to befriend another officer. He also told me about the uproar hiring me created.

“You should have heard the griping when we found out a woman was going to the academy. Your age didn’t help,” he said truthfully. He cast a sideways glance in my direction and smiled. “Most of us have never worked with a woman. In this day and age it shouldn’t make a difference, but it’s change and people drag their feet, especially cops.” Now his smile mixed with teasing in his eyes. “We didn’t know what to expect, and we were worried about you carrying a purse with your uniform or something else just as ridiculous.”

His honesty and teasing didn’t bother me. However, it was hard not to point out that Small Town and most rural departments were far behind when it came to hiring women of any age.
