Clue explanations

Across

1. Move along slowly is the first definition and a small distance is the second definition. The answer starts with I.

3. This clue uses an archaic definition. Decoy is the first definition, and put ornamental harness on horse is the archaic second definition. The answer starts with T.

6. In this clue and is a linking word, which can indicate that a double definition clue is in play. The clue is basically saying that the answer can be defined as a synonym for complain, and as a synonym for a fish. The answer starts with C.

7. The apostrophe s (blonde’s) can be expanded to say the answer is a synonym for blonde, which is also defined as a synonym for honest. The answer starts with F — I’m sure you can get it!

9. To is a linking word, which points to a double definition. Travel by air is the first definition and annoying insect is the second.

12. Double definition clues can sometimes clue quite long words — the answer to this one has nine letters! Bewitches is the first definition, with is the linking word and entries (meaning doors into a venue) is the second definition.

13. Wrench is the first definition and despicable fool is the second. Despicable could conceivably be an anagram indicator, but the letter count (4) helps here — the letters to be rearranged must appear ‘in the open’ in an anagram clue (refer to Chapter 2 for more detail). Because none of the words in this clue are four letters long, an anagram isn’t the device being used here.

14. Zero is a particular score in tennis, and affection is the second definition.

Down

1. Not only can the answer be defined as inflame, but also as joss stick.

2. Smoke meat is the first definition and to is the linking word. Restore to health is the second definition (but you knew that already, didn’t you?!).

4. You already know this is a double definition clue, so have a go at putting a ‘mental comma’ between various words of the clue to see if the two definitions fall out nicely. Bring, up hind part doesn’t work and neither does bring up hind, part. However (chances are you’re there before me!), bring up, hind part works perfectly! The answer starts with R.

5. Repeats mindlessly is the first definition and bright birds is the second one. Ignore the punctuation and capital letter!

8. Because a few more words are offered in this clue, try adding the ‘mental comma’ again. Don’t, sink cash for expenses doesn’t really work, nor does don’t sink cash, for expenses. The right split in this case is don’t sink as the first definition, and cash for expenses as the second.

10. Leading lady is the first definition and celestial body (an astronomical term) is the second definition. With is a linking word.

11. This clue is a bit trickier because you need to know a bit of ancient Greek mythology to solve it (time to pull out your reference books!). The apostrophe s can be expanded to say that Greek nymph is also reflection.
