Okay, so bringing her into his home was one of his stupider moves. It was done, and he couldn’t change it now. Brett gave himself an inward shake.

Focus. It’s what you’re good at, right? What you’re known for?

The image of a long-ago day with his very first training officer shot through his mind. A day when he’d walked right past a crucial bit of evidence in pursuit of another bit of evidence. That evening’s debriefing had been a rough one.

You’ve got great focus, Shea. But you’re going to have to learn that sometimes focus becomes tunnel vision.

Well, he could use a little tunnel vision just now. Then maybe he could concentrate on this case instead of...the victim. This victim.

She was the fool, not you.

She’d said it so softly, looking right at him, and it had been a tremendous effort not to read more into it than was there. She’d just meant what he’d meant, that it hadn’t been his fault. She was just being kind, supportive. Trying to pay him back a little, he supposed.

This was getting...muddy. He usually had no trouble thinking big picture, and he would usually be determined to take this guy down for the sake of all of the victims. But this time his usually disciplined mind seemed to have stubbornly decided this one, this woman, was who he was doing it for. As if he had some personal stake in this. As if he wanted to do it just for her, because...because...

Because what? Because she was, in a way, a colleague? Because she was so good with Ember? Because she was in many ways an innocent, who’d been taken advantage of? Because she’d looked at him with tears in those big eyes? Because he wanted to see her smile again, see those dimples flash?

Or was it because—he might as well admit it—he had the hots for her? But then, what man wouldn’t? What man could look into those eyes and not want to jump?

He swore silently. He sounded like some hormonal teenager with a crush. He hadn’t spent so much time in useless mental meanderings since high school.

“Let’s get this set up,” he said, not quite gruffly, as he turned back to the computer. “Just the basics now. I want to see what’s involved in setting up a profile. Ellie’s working on some details and photos, then I can actually start setting it up.”

They began, and more than once when an app question popped up that seemed very personal and private to him, he glanced at her and asked, “People really answer all these...questions? Share all this, with people they’ve never even met?” At her expression he added hastily, “I’m not accusing, just asking.”

Still, it was a moment before she answered. “You don’t have to answer everything, to set up your profile. But I answered most of it. It seemed the best way to find a good match.” She sighed audibly, and he knew she was about to say something self-condemning again, so he held up a hand.
