The chief of staff went red. "Not at all. A board member. Probably heard about the remarkable development."

"That would be hard, unless Dr. Jacobs called a board member the minute he got the tests back—what, thirty minutes ago?" Vic prodded.

Jacobs shook his head. Vic saw him decide he'd better get charge of his case again if it was going to make his name. And he evidently thought it would. "Well, we have lots of work to do. Dr. Nanger, I think a full workup of function?"

The younger man nodded. His untidy pale goatee seemed to match his faded scrubs. "We'll want a minute-by-minute record in case the function starts to deteriorate again." Nanger spoke in a slight German accent.

Vic had to work fast or Jodie and his new body would be as much trapped here at the hospital as his core program was in Neuromancer. "I don't think Mrs. Reston wants to have John poked and prodded anymore." She put her hand on Mrs. Reston's shoulder. "You almost managed to harvest organs today on someone who was still alive."

Mrs. Reston sat up a little straighter. "My Johnny would have been dead by now, if you'd had your way."

Vic looked around at the doctors, challenging, then back down at Jodie. The crease of pain between his brows worried her. Now he was blinking faster and his gaze darted about the hospital room. What was going on? Hell, his whole condition was a mystery. Could he deteriorate as the specialist thought? She had to get him out of here before McIntire or one of his many connections showed up and did it for her.

She could practically feel police converging on the place if the chief of staff didn't call back shortly. "I think we'll take him home, don't you?" Vic asked Mrs. Reston. Trust me, she willed. You've got to trust me.

"You can't do that," practically everybody said at once.

Mrs. Reston glanced between Jodie and Vic uncertainly.

"Yes she can," Vic said, rising. "Nurse, please order an ambulance."

"He's an ill man," Dr. Jacobs pleaded. "We have to understand what's happened."

"I think he'll recover better in the comfort of his own home," Vic said firmly. But she could see the fear steal over Mrs. Reston's features. Who could imagine taking someone who'd been declared dead yesterday home today?

"For God's sake, he has a hole bored in his skull," Jacobs said.

Mrs. Reston turned to Vic in alarm.

"You send people home with holes and shunts and worse every day." Vic tried to keep her voice soothing, but she'd lost Mrs. Reston and she knew it.
