ALMI

“Who is he?” asked Galatea when I returned to the two women.

“My friend from when I was a kid. He’s been taking care of my sister for me. Ever since Poseidon sent me away.” Seeing Silos had forced out some of my new, softer feelings toward the ocean god, and reminded me of just what he had put me and Lily through.

“Do you still want me to visit your sister?” asked Persephone, voice gentle.

“Yes! Oh my god, yes, I would love you to,” I told her. “The next time we get a long enough break from these Trials, I would be so grateful if we could go to her.”

I didn’t think Persephone could cure her, but I couldn’t see how it could hurt. Any information would be useful, as would any slowing down of the process.

“Of course. Just use that rose I gave you to let me know you need me. Hephaestus made it for me. Well,” she said, frowning. “Hades asked Hephaestus to make it for me. He’s a little… shy around women.”

“Isn’t he married to like, the ultimate woman, Aphrodite?”

Anger sparked in Persephone’s eyes. “Don’t talk to me about that witch,” she spat.

“Now, now,” chided a male voice, deep and lyrical. “You mustn’t speak ill of the Olympians.” Apollo appeared beside us with a shimmer of gold. And gold was the only word I could think of as I took him in. His tousled golden hair flopped down over gleaming golden eyes. His toga too was gold, and fastened with a huge, golden, lyre brooch.

“Good evening, Apollo,” Persephone said.

He threw a brief but devastating smile at her, then locked his eyes on me.

“You, Almi, are very, very interesting. Who knew the old water goat had a wife?”

I shifted uncomfortably. “Well, the whole world knows now.”

“You are a sea nymph, yes?” I nodded. “Then…. Why do you have air magic?”

My stomach clenched, both with excitement and nerves. “You can feel my magic?”

“Sugar, I’m an elemental weather god. Of course I can.”

I swallowed. “I’m only just learning how to use it,” I admitted. Poseidon had said that Apollo wasn’t a threat, and if he could feel my magic, there wasn’t much point lying to him.

He grinned at me, and my chest tightened. He was frigging beautiful. Not in the same way as Poseidon — not at all. Poseidon was solid-mass-of-deep-and-mysterious-power kind of beautiful whereas Apollo was joyous-to-look-at kind of beautiful.

“Want a tip?”

“Sure.”

“You can’t control air. It is almost as wild as the ocean, and it may not be as strong or powerful, but everything relies on it. Everything. It has all the power.”

I blinked at him. “I can’t control it?”

“Nope. Don’t even try. If you can win over the wind, you’ll have an ally for life, but you can’t bend air to any will.”

I tried to process his words. “So, how do I—”

Before I could finish my question, he was gone, striding toward two women with tree bark for skin and green hair.

“Air magic?” Galatea was staring at me like I’d grown a second head.
