As a Westerner, your inclination may be to promote yourself and pursue actions that help you to stand out, to raise yourself out from the crowd, to push yourself forward. These actions may be a little risky, or may not be for the overall benefit of the team, the group, or the nation, but as you are the driving force and you are the star of your own movie, you do them.

This is so deeply rooted in our thinking that most of us are not even aware that it is a choice we are making. However, we need to remain highly aware of the fact that the behaviours we value and expect are not universally shared. Others will likely have very different priorities and preferred scenarios.

If we are unaware of these differences, problems can arise where in fact there are none. We may perceive conflict where none exists. Underlying agreement can be clouded by surface differences in emotional style.

Ray heads a scientific research team at a highly prestigious institution in Singapore. His work is known globally and his professional reputation is one of highly credible authority, based on years of diligent work and solid results. But Ray does not look like the scientist of popular culture. There is no mop of messy white hair, no paunch or hunch, no exaggerated arm waving or forehead slapping. Ray looks to be in his mid-30s but I know he is a decade older than that. He has neatly cropped brown hair. He is physically well-toned and conveys a love of life and his discipline. When we meet, he has just come from the gym.
