MODELS

Spoons, as their name implies, have a shape not unlike that of a spoon. They’re made of flat metal stock, curved to form a spoon shape, and tapered at the head and tail. Some have a fixed O’Shaugh-nessy-style hooked attached to the spoon with a small nut and bolt. Others have a split ring at the tail, along with a free-swinging hook usually dressed with feathers or bucktail.

Surf sizes range from tiny 1-inch-long shad spoons to 4- and 5-inch-long models up to an inch in width that target larger game species. They are by design very lightweight, and while the heavier models can be cast fairly well if you use a light outfit, many anglers find it beneficial to add a trolling sinker, two or three feet ahead of the spoon, between line and leader, for the extra weight often necessary to execute a long cast.
