Chapter 15

I could count on one hand the number of times I’d been to Rosie’s address, and I wasn’t sure I’d ever actually been inside the building. The woman took her privacy seriously.

On the way, I stopped at Dot’s place, and the two of us hopped into her car, thinking it would be less conspicuous than Queenie, especially if we had to come back and stake the place out. Dot emerged looking as if she’d just returned from her aerobic walking class, wearing a pastel-pink velour tracksuit and enormous, expensive-looking sunglasses, carrying a large designer straw tote.

“I don’t know what look you’re going for, but it’s definitely giving off ‘Betty White in Golden Girls marries a guy for his money and is now living the life after he’s conked it’ vibes,” I said as I climbed into the driver’s seat.

“Good. That’s exactly what I’m going for. I’m not Dot anymore. I’m now Francine Murphy, recently widowed wife of Eugene Murphy. We’re from Chicago originally, but we lived in Battle Creek, Michigan, for decades, where my husband worked for General Mills, and that’s where he made his fortune. Eugene came up with the idea for Lucky Charms.”

“I guess I owe my childhood to your fake husband, then.”

“So you do. Eugene—may God rest his soul—was deathly afraid of flying. If only he’d been just as afraid of a brain aneurysm. So we never travelled, but now that he’s passed, I’ve decided I’m going to be spending my winters somewhere far warmer than Michigan and Illinois, so I’m thinking about renting a place up here in Hawaii. I don’t want to buy a property, as I’m a miser who won’t want to leave it to my children, because they’re all ingrates.”

I snorted. “Sounds about right.”

“But you, you’re my granddaughter, the only good one of the bunch.”

“Have I got a name?” I asked. I started the car and began driving.

“Melissa.”

I scrunched up my face. “I have nothing against the name, but I don’t look like a Melissa.”

“Fine. What name do you want, then?”

“I want to be Taylor.”

“Okay, fine. You’re Taylor Murphy, and you’re my granddaughter. You’re the only one who has realized that I’ve left all my children out of the will, and you’re taking advantage by taking care of your grandmother in the hopes that I’ll leave everything to you. But I also realize that you’re a gold-digger who doesn’t actually care about her grandmother, and while I’m leading you on, pretending that you’re going to be left in the will, in reality, I’m going to be leaving you with nothing.”

“Wow, Taylor is offended,” I replied. “You’ve put a lot of thought into this fake identity.”

“We have to get our story straight. Besides, I was frustrated over that stupid camera.”

“Can’t find anything identifying?”

“No. I need the device the camera was connected to. It’s the only way I’m going to be able to find the person who left it. That’s what Rosie’s doing now—she’s checking out the place.”

“Well, if Jake’s around, Rosie won’t get caught, at least.
