“A blood oath? Why? What are you, some kind of savage?” Asked a younger woman whose name Ryan hadn’t gotten yet. “A– a demon, or something?”

Her voice rose in alarm with every word. One bruised hand rose to the silver cross at her neck as if for protection. Ryan tried not to raise an eyebrow at that. It never seemed to help, and she wasn’t the first half-delirious patient who needed some time to adjust after healing.

This was now the 24th person they’d brought to him. The poor lass had been shot in the back at least five or six times. He’d stopped her injuries from worsening and stabilized her for the most part, but as with the rest Ryan found himself loath to spend points on a perfect recuperation without receiving something in return. Which, of course, also meant he needed an assurance that his capacity to heal the body to such a degree would be kept quiet.

Not everyone had accepted the offer for him to fix the rest of their injuries, given what Ryan was asking. Not that he had expected them all too. Turning him down was fine. Most had. There wasn’t a penalty or anything.

Ryan raised his hands placatingly. “I’m no demon, and I don’t want your soul. My ability to heal just… takes a lot out of me. I can fix you good as new, without even a single scar. But if I’m going to do that for you, then I want to know the effort will be worth it on my end.”

He took a step back, giving her extra space. “All I want in return is a favor, to be named later. That’s it. Promise.”

The young woman leaned back from him a bit, as if to contemplate, though the movement appeared to aggravate her injuries. She hissed through her teeth at the sensation and it took a second or two of breathing for her to calm back down.

Ryan waited patiently, giving her the time she needed. This wasn’t something he enjoyed doing, pressing people when they were vulnerable. But being an altruist right now wouldn’t help free the town from Marcus. The energy reserves he’d brought with him had run dry on his last patient, and there were only so many points to go around.

Too few points. Ryan amended mentally. Feels like I’ll never have enough.

“I’m not going to sleep with you.” She stated suddenly, meeting his eyes with some defiant steel in her own. There was a touch of anger as well, and her hand gripped the table as if she expected the statement to start a fight.

Why is that always the first thing women assume men want? Ryan lamented. Is it society’s fault for putting it into our heads, or is it just the natural human assumption that sex is the only favor someone else would want to trade for?

Outwardly, Ryan quickly shook his head. “That’s not what I’m after. I don’t want anything sexual from you in any way. You're not even my type.
