Chapter 12

The next morning, I snuck out of the house early. Betina was home, and asleep, Chase was crashed on the couch, but there was no sign of Bay, Eldoris, or any other ocean supernaturals. Even Evie was out of sight, so I was able to feed the animals quickly and get out without conversation. I pulled into the yoga studio happy to forget myself for a few hours in a hot room with quiet music.

“Good morning, Sara,” I said to the human girl who was running the front desk today.

“Fawn! I am so glad you’re here, did Betina tell you about the creep we had in here yesterday?” She shivered a little

“Yeah, she told me. Don’t worry, he won’t be in again.” Sara looked like she wanted to ask why I knew that, but she didn’t. She was smart for a human, she sensed something was off about me and Betina and some others, but she had enough self preservation instincts to not ask.

Annabel was waiting outside the studio when I was done a couple hours later, and we headed to the zoo. I’d showered and dressed after my classes and felt fresh and ready to take on this mystery.

“How was your short night?” Annabel asked, and I know she meant what had happened with Dante.

“Fine.”

“And did you talk to Logan?”

“He messaged, he has taken Kyle to Brakemoor, you can tell Tara that he will likely not be seen again, ever.”

Annabel nodded, a little sullen. Death was not to be disrespected, but sometimes it was necessary to the good of the many. “Do we have a plan?” Annabel asked, changing the subject.

“Just to hang around the bats, act interested, and hope to find someone who has the smell of old magic clinging to them.”

“Easy plan.”

“Have you ever heard of a Vampire able to invade your mind?”

“Well they glamour humans, so they can feed forgetably.”

“I know that, but I am talking about thoughts, feelings… dreams projected into the mind even.”

“That would be a very powerful gift.”

“Dangerous.”

“Very,” Annabel said thoughtfully and gave me a worried look.

I smiled as I drove, “Don’t worry Annabel, I am in control of myself, I just wondered.” She didn’t press, but I knew she could feel my deep concern.

Today we had to pay to get into the zoo and I was thankful there wasn’t a police force milling around and investigating a murdered night guard. I never did check on the human to make sure Dante hadn’t killed him, I was afraid of what I would find. I was struck again by the animals’ despair as we made our way through the zoo. It was overwhelming, Annabel touched my shoulder and the crushing weight of it eased a bit. It wasn’t as complete as Dante’s magic had been, but it helped.

“Thanks,” I sighed.

“Of course,” she said simply, as if it were no big deal.

She gave me a wink, her Elf side made her sensitive to other’s emotions, I wondered how much she felt when I was so overwhelmed.
