Wanda, Bree, and I are in the kitchen, leaning side by side on the kitchen bench, watching Lelani and Roann in deep discussion in the courtyard. They’re not yelling or fighting, but the conversation is intense and punctuated by strong hand gestures and stare-downs.

Bree sighs, ‘They are seriously good-looking. Like, unnaturally good-looking.’

‘I can’t believe you’ve tapped that,’ says Wanda, shaking her head at Roann and adjusting the scarf around her neck, ‘And she works at the council? How I have I not seen her before?’

‘Stop objectifying my booty call. But I know, it’s mesmerising.’

‘To say the least.’ Bree helps herself to another rice paper roll. ‘It’s like watching art converse.’

Wanda nods, entranced, ‘I’ve completely forgotten why I’m here.’

‘I had a coffee with her the other day. The waiter gave me extra marshmallows in my hot chocolate, just for being with her.’

‘Nice,’ breathes Wanda.

‘What’s going to happen now, Jess?’ asks Bree, finally breaking her eyes away from the courtyard and Roann’s biceps.

‘Well, once they’ve caught up, I’ve got some news to tell you, and I’m hoping Roann will take you into the forest and give you a lesson like he did me.’

‘Good sharing, Jess. I’ll sign up for that lesson,’ grins Bree. Wanda giggles.

‘Seriously, you two, it’s been fifteen minutes, you can put your tongues back in your mouth now.’

Bree straightens up and stretches. ‘Gold star for managing to function on a daily basis with a distraction like him going on, that’s all I’m saying. Okay, let’s get this big reveal going, it’s a school night, I’ve got to get home.’

Out in the courtyard, Roann and Lelani are still in deep discussion but it looks a little less volatile now, more relaxed. Roann is leaning back in the outdoor dining chair, smiling at something Lelani has said. Twilight is falling through the wisteria, giving the courtyard a blue glow. I turn on the fairy lights and walk outside.

Lelani turns as we enter the courtyard. ‘Thank you for inviting me over, Jessica. Good secret-keeping, by the way. I knew you knew something but I would not have guessed the whole thing was playing out in your backyard.’

Lelani looks at me with mild admiration, which for Lelani is a lot of admiration. I search her face for some indication that I’ve just let an evil nemesis in on a key secret that will lead to my demise, but I can’t see anything. I hope I’ve made the right decision. Roann’s face is beaming, so I’m guessing he thinks I have. Fingers crossed.

‘Lelani is going to let my use of the rip slide due to me being her little brother, but we fear there is much more action to come with this rip. We need to talk,’ says Roann, turning to me with a serious expression.

‘Little brother! Ha!’ I giggle.

Lelani laughs a short, staccato laugh at my surprise and turns to Roann. ‘Yes.’ She cups Roann’s chin and gives his beard plait a tug. Adorable and a little weird.

I sit down. ‘We do need to talk.
