Wanda, Bree, and I are in the kitchen, leaning side by side on the kitchen bench, watching Lelani and Roann in deep discussion in the courtyard. Theyâre not yelling or fighting, but the conversation is intense and punctuated by strong hand gestures and stare-downs.
Bree sighs, âThey are seriously good-looking. Like, unnaturally good-looking.â
âI canât believe youâve tapped that,â says Wanda, shaking her head at Roann and adjusting the scarf around her neck, âAnd she works at the council? How I have I not seen her before?â
âStop objectifying my booty call. But I know, itâs mesmerising.â
âTo say the least.â Bree helps herself to another rice paper roll. âItâs like watching art converse.â
Wanda nods, entranced, âIâve completely forgotten why Iâm here.â
âI had a coffee with her the other day. The waiter gave me extra marshmallows in my hot chocolate, just for being with her.â
âNice,â breathes Wanda.
âWhatâs going to happen now, Jess?â asks Bree, finally breaking her eyes away from the courtyard and Roannâs biceps.
âWell, once theyâve caught up, Iâve got some news to tell you, and Iâm hoping Roann will take you into the forest and give you a lesson like he did me.â
âGood sharing, Jess. Iâll sign up for that lesson,â grins Bree. Wanda giggles.
âSeriously, you two, itâs been fifteen minutes, you can put your tongues back in your mouth now.â
Bree straightens up and stretches. âGold star for managing to function on a daily basis with a distraction like him going on, thatâs all Iâm saying. Okay, letâs get this big reveal going, itâs a school night, Iâve got to get home.â
Out in the courtyard, Roann and Lelani are still in deep discussion but it looks a little less volatile now, more relaxed. Roann is leaning back in the outdoor dining chair, smiling at something Lelani has said. Twilight is falling through the wisteria, giving the courtyard a blue glow. I turn on the fairy lights and walk outside.
Lelani turns as we enter the courtyard. âThank you for inviting me over, Jessica. Good secret-keeping, by the way. I knew you knew something but I would not have guessed the whole thing was playing out in your backyard.â
Lelani looks at me with mild admiration, which for Lelani is a lot of admiration. I search her face for some indication that Iâve just let an evil nemesis in on a key secret that will lead to my demise, but I canât see anything. I hope Iâve made the right decision. Roannâs face is beaming, so Iâm guessing he thinks I have. Fingers crossed.
âLelani is going to let my use of the rip slide due to me being her little brother, but we fear there is much more action to come with this rip. We need to talk,â says Roann, turning to me with a serious expression.
âLittle brother! Ha!â I giggle.
Lelani laughs a short, staccato laugh at my surprise and turns to Roann. âYes.â She cups Roannâs chin and gives his beard plait a tug. Adorable and a little weird.
I sit down. âWe do need to talk.
