Lawson shifted the moment he disappeared through the tree line.

He prowled through the moonlit High Country, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear and determination. The night air carried the scent of eucalyptus and adventure, and the danger that lurked close behind.

He could sense the soldiers in the bush, hidden amongst the rugged granite. They were probably scanning the surrounding land with their night-vision goggles, trying to pinpoint how many people were back at the house. Hopefully, Nathan’s magic could hide Grace and Arthur long enough for him to lead the soldiers away.

As he moved farther away from the others, he felt a flicker of confusion and curiosity about Nathan’s magic. While he’d embraced his abilities, the anthropologist’s powers remained a puzzle. The incantations and illusions had shielded them during their escape from the city, but the workings remained beyond his grasp. He believed in things he could see with his own two eyes—science—despite what he was and what he could do. He simply couldn’t wrap his head around the concept of witchcraft.

As he bounded across a clearing, Lawson’s enhanced hearing picked up the faint murmur of Nathan’s voice drifting on the breeze. Intrigued, he altered his course, veering towards the sound. Slowing to a cautious stalk, he caught sight of Nathan, his outstretched arms weaving ethereal patterns in the air.

He blinked and turned back towards the dark bush, knowing he couldn’t get side-tracked.

As Lawson moved through the trees, his sleek black panther form melded with the shadows seamlessly, melting amongst the scattered boulders and outcroppings. His paws left no trace as he manoeuvred with calculated grace. His muscles rippled beneath his ebony fur, the moonlight casting a faint shimmer upon his coat.

He found the first traces of the tactical team deeper in the range, their scent filled with the metallic tang of gunpowder and sweat. It stood out amongst the sharp eucalyptus, though he wondered if they’d taken precautions against leaving traces. There was something else entwined with their signature he couldn’t place, but it didn’t matter. Whatever it was, was no match for his supernatural nose.

Leaping up onto the nearest granite outcropping, Lawson stood tall and proud, daring them to pursue him.

And they took the bait…hook, line, and sinker.

The soldiers closed in, their presence growing stronger. Lawson’s heart thudded in his chest as he considered the risks. Should he take them head-on, using his supernatural abilities to hunt them to their ends? Or should he teach them a lesson they’d never forget and run them to exhaustion, while luring them into the deep wilderness of the mountains?

Whatever he decided, he needed to act fast. They’d already spotted him outlined like a ghostly shadow against the night sky.

Their unnatural outlines lingered amongst the trees, and he tensed, ready to move. Six, he counted. Six men who would either die or become lost in the High Country. Which would it be?

“Give yourself up,” one of the soldiers said as he stepped out of the trees. “No one has to die.
