When I woke up, I was lying in a dim room on a velvet chaise longue by a fire. Under my head was a soft cushion, and above me were dark beams across a low, whitewashed ceiling. A tiny grille window filtered in a small amount of sunlight.

Otnel sat beside me.

I reached out for his hand - he was the closest thing I had to a friend. Then I said: "Celestine Coquis is my sister."

Otnel was silent for a moment. Eventually, he spoke. "The time for pretence is over. Let me speak plainly. I guessed you were her sister as soon as I saw you. When you told me your name, that confirmed it. Hora agreed."

I recalled how Hora had looked at me so strangely. How the serving woman in the tavern had seemed frightened of me. The auctioneer too, and the old shifter I asked about the mural. They must have seen something of Celestine in me. And what they saw terrified them.

"The reason everybody seems to recognise you," said Otnel, "is because they do. They see you are a near-twin of the enchantress."

"Who is she in this realm?"

Otnel sighed. "She's the reason Miris is the way it is. She incited the warlocks to action and encouraged them to seize power. She keeps them fighting now."

"How does she do that?"

"She's able to possess minds."

I breathed deeply. So she had the same power as me. However, she used it for malice. "She's a demon then?" It made sense. She'd been so frightening in my encounters with her in the spirit realm. She had not been the sister I remembered.

"That's an accurate name for what she is." He looked around the room as if someone might be listening. "She insists everyone refers to her as an enchantress, however, on pain of death."

"I'm sorry I fainted," I said. "How stupid."

"Not at all," said Otnel. "I can understand what a shock it must have been." To my surprise, he took my hand with both of his, squeezing it between his warm, strong palms. It helped - immediately afterwards, I had the strength to sit up.

"I'm okay," I said.

He looked at me blankly. Mirisians did not know the word 'okay'.

"I mean I'm alright," I explained. "I've recovered. Let's get the horses and go."
