Sundance buried Sarah and Micah the next day. He rode out to old Micah’s place behind the hearse, then told the undertaker to get away from there. The coffins, hastily made, lay side by side in the sun- yellowed grass while he dug the graves. They had been his only friends in Cimarron City, and it was only fitting that they should be together in death. What he would do with the rest of his life he wasn’t sure. He guessed he would go on with his work, as he had always done. The only sound in the bright sunshine was the little creek that ran close to the weathered house. There were trees along the creek, and the grass was still green under the trees.

He didn’t feel much of anything. All he knew was that Sam Ryker had to die; the hatred he had for the man had become cold determination. There was no hurry because Ryker was already a dead man, and nothing he might say or do could buy him back his life. He could scream and beg and say he was sorry when the time came; nothing would change. Of that Sundance was sure as he was sure of nothing else.

When the graves were finished he used a white hot poker to burn their names into two slabs of wood. Just their names—SARAH and MICAH—and nothing else. He had never known their last names; it didn’t matter: they had been his friends. Now it was done, and he stood by the creek looking at the twin mounds of freshly turned earth. He didn’t read over them. “I won’t forget you,” was all he said. He thought of the first day Sarah had come to the jail with the tray of food, of the things she said. He remembered her quick temper, and of how her face softened a moment later. There was so much to remember: they had packed a lifetime into a few days. She had wanted to make something of her life, and a bunch of savages had taken it away from her. It was time to go.

He rode south without going through Cimarron City. There was nothing left there for him, no one he ever wanted to see again. Then he remembered that he was still wearing the sheriff’s star and he threw it in the dust. It didn’t mean anything, not now. He had no way of knowing how long it would take to find Ryker. He’d be heading back to Texas, back to his fine house. He had a good start, but that made no difference.

When Sundance got to the top of the hill that led down to Micah’s place he turned for one last look. It was hot, quiet, peaceful along the banks of the little creek. One last look, then he forced the grief from his mind. From now on he would track Ryker with the cold skill of the professional hunter. He would tackle the job ahead with patience and cunning.
