The late morning sun beat down on the sidewalk outside Pepper Jalisco’s, the heat shimmering in waves above the pavement. As I approached the restaurant’s vibrant facade with Landon at my side, the scent of sizzling fajitas and spicy salsa wafted through the air, making my stomach growl in anticipation. We were so focused on our impending lunch that we almost collided with a figure emerging from the doorway.

“Oh!” I exclaimed, stumbling back a step. “I’m sorry, I didn’t see—”

The words died in my throat as I recognized the flowing robes and silver hair of Sage Moonbeam. Her dark eyes locked onto mine.

“Eleanor Rockwell,” Sage intoned, her voice low and melodious. “The universe whispered our paths would cross again soon.”

“Did the universe whisper about hidden microphones in bags, too?” I asked, unable to keep the edge from my voice.

Sage’s eyebrows rose, but her serene expression remained unchanged. “I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, her tone calm. “All my information comes from what the cosmos reveals to me.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but Landon’s hand on my arm stopped me. I glanced around as a couple brushed past us, giving our little group a curious look as they entered Pepper Jalisco’s.

We were blocking the entrance, I realized, creating a bit of a scene.

Lowering my voice, I leaned in closer to Sage. “Look, we found the listening device you hid in that bundle. Why were you trying to spy on me?”

Sage’s eyes widened, a flicker of... something passing across her face. Surprise? Guilt? It was gone before I could be sure. “Eleanor,” she said, her voice taking on a note of gentle reproach, “I assure you, I have no need for such mundane methods of gathering information. The universe provides all I need to know.”

How could she stand there, so calm and collected, denying what we’d found with our own eyes? But before I could press further, Sage’s expression changed, her eyes taking on a distant, unfocused quality.

“I sense... a great disturbance,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “The curse that plagued Marigold... it lingers still.”

“What curse?” I asked. “What are you even talking about?”

Sage’s gaze snapped back to mine. “The curse of greed,” she said, her words carrying a weight that seemed to hang in the air between us. “It tore apart what should have been a beautiful love story, poisoned by the lure and the threat of wealth and power.”

I exchanged a glance with Landon.

Was Sage talking about Marigold and Jasper?

Or was this just more of her cryptic nonsense?

“Can you ask the cosmos to be more specific?” Landon asked politely.

“No. I ask nothing.” Sage shook her head, silver hair catching the sunlight. “The details are... clouded. But I do see a great conflict, rooted in the earth itself. A battle between those who would heal and those who would exploit.” Sage’s eyes seemed to look through me, focused on something I couldn’t see. “The answer lies with the roo,” she said. “You must speak to the roo.
