ISLA

The safehouse was a frickin’ shanty.

It barely had a kitchen and living room. Worst of all, there was only one bedroom. Ergo, one bed.

To top it off, the electricity was out.

“I’ll check the breaker,” Kade said, heading for the hall closet masquerading as a laundry room. “Maybe it just needs a reset.”

I cast another glance over our new crackerjack box living quarters, then backed toward the front door. “I’m just gonna go . . . get some fresh air.”

The second I touched the doorknob, Kade whipped his head out of the closet. “Where are you going?”

“I don’t know. To check out the sights?”

“In the rain?”

“Why not?” I said, feeling hysteria bubble up. “I’m sure it looks the same, dry or wet.”

“Isla,” he said, his expression softening. “Why don’t you unpack your things and get settled in? We can explore the island together when the storm passes.”

Something about what he said tipped me over the edge. Or maybe it was his voice. How calm he sounded, when I was unraveling at the seams.

“This isn’t a vacation, Kade,” I said too sharply. “I’m here to lay low so I don’t end up in a supernatural prison. Oh, and let’s not forget that I have to detox so I don’t go feral. So, no, I’m not going to settle in. I’m going to frickin’ let off some steam. Alone. And do it however or wherever I want.”

With that, I whipped the door open and slammed it shut behind me, so hard that it nearly rattled off its hinges. Too late, I realized I’d left my raincoat inside. My shirt was already soaking through. No way was I going back inside though. I probably only had seconds before Kade came after me. He’d been so flipping protective lately. I worried he’d use his sire abilities and command me to stay, which made me desperate for space. Lots of it.

Picking a random direction, I took off at top speed. With the wind and the rain masking my scent, Kade should have trouble tracking me down right away. I at least had a few minutes to myself. The terrain was rocky, interspersed with tall pale grass and black spruce trees. The closer I got to shore though, the flatter it became. In under a minute, I was at the edge. Angry waves pounded over the rocks, reaching for my waterlogged shoes. I stared out across the ocean, at the endless expanse of . . . nothing.

It was so huge and powerful, and I was so insignificant and . . . and weak.

I was completely and utterly helpless here.

The realization made so much panic well up inside me that I tipped back my head and screamed. Screamed and screamed and screamed until my throat burned with more than bloodthirst for once.

I felt a presence soon after, and knew it was him. There was no one else on this godforsaken spit of land. But I wasn’t ready yet. Wasn’t ready to face him. To accept this harsh new reality.
