The rose water had apparently been just what I needed, and I sighed in relief when I realized the bright light of the sun that filtered through the windows no longer irritated my head. Tucking my damp waves behind my ears, I made my way to the hall, and ducked my chin when both Keyno and Leena turned to me as I entered the room.

“Morning, Hazel. You’re looking well.” Keyno smiled knowingly, and I glared at his mate, annoyed that she had told him about my condition this morning.

“Thank you,” I snapped sarcastically before taking a seat. I grabbed an apple, ignoring the basket of rolls and assorted jams, though my eyes did linger on the half-empty one.

“We received two hawks today,” Leena began, and my eyes lifted to her face. “Neither spoke of your friends, but one did mention a halfling who has been looking for you.”

“A halfling?” I asked, confused.

“Apparently you’ve met once before.” Leena shrugged.

“Unfortunately, that does not narrow it down. I’ve met many halflings over the last year and a half. There was no name mentioned?” The immortal shook her head.

“No, but she was adamant about speaking with you, and apparently has convinced Lord Ewen to give her a horse, though he has sent three of his men along with her.”

My brow furrowed. “She is coming here?”

“Yes, I agreed to give her an audience on your behalf. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Of course not, but I wonder what it is she needs.”

“Who knows,” Keyno answered, and then he lifted the package onto the table and slid it across the tabletop. “I suppose we shall see, but in the meantime, you have these to preoccupy your time and mind. Might be better for you than the ale from the inn.”

Choosing to ignore him, I pulled at the twine that held the package together then carefully peeled the parchment away.

“Books?” I asked, and then my eyes caught Keyno’s.

“They are still in the tongue of old, of course, but there are a lot of portraits, and one of us can read them to you should you desire to know what they say,” he promised.

“Thank you, this is a very considerate gift.”

Keyno glanced at his mate and then rubbed at his neck sheepishly. “They’re actually not from me.”

“Oh,” I whispered and then the room grew awkward.

Leena reached across the table to pick up one of the books, and as she flipped through it, she cleared her throat. “He had a meeting with some advisors in the throne room, he may still be there.”

I shouldn’t have wanted to see him, and I certainly should not have been touched by his thoughtfulness, and yet it seemed as if my mind and heart were in a battle of wills. Glancing at the two books that remained in front of me, I thought of my options.

We could carry on the way we had been, avoiding and ignoring each other unless absolutely necessary while I waited for Barrick to heal or for news of Gaelon.
