Chapter Eighteen
I made sure Taylin stood behind me as I peered around the corner. We werenât probably the most subtle spies in the history of spying, but we were having fun.
Weâd followed Joseph from his house, driving just far enough behind him that he couldnât see us when he arrived at the restaurant. His wife, Selana, was with him. We watched them sitting on an outside terrace. They looked relaxed, even though I could see the line of Josephâs shoulders tighten at something Selana said.
âThis isnât really the education I expected,â Taylin muttered.
I grinned at her. âI'm non-traditional that way.â Then again, this entire situation wasn't traditional. Who exactly expected âoh by the way, youâre a witch, and now you've taken in a witch. Surprise.â
That certainly hadnât exactly been in my life plans. Not that it stopped me from taking responsibility for it. I didnât regret my choice.
We stood there for a while longer, watching. It wasnât a windy enough day that I was willing to manipulate the few breezes, not wanting to risk drawing attention. Even if they didn't suspect me, they could suspect Vivian, because she was the only other one that could manipulate the weather.
I glanced at my watch and sighed. Then my eyes widened.
âI'm late,â I muttered. I rubbed my forehead with my hands. For some reason Vivian had insisted on an afternoon session tonight. Normally they were in the morning.
âFor a lesson with Vivian?â Taylin looked excited.
I pointed at her. âYou canât tell her what we were doing.â
âI promise.â Her eyes didnât agree.
I groaned. Vivian apparently drew more loyalty from my pseudo-child than I did.
Then again, Vivian was a lot more terrifying than I was. We headed back to Betsy, and I drove the pair of us back to the Main House. Reeseâs police car was parked in the driveway.
Taylin stayed behind me, which didn't surprise me. Her main memories of Reese were the whole being accused of murder and investigation thing. That had definitely left an impression.
Still, when we got inside the main door, Taylin grinned. I could already hear his voice, and his polite, yet exasperated, remarks.
âIf you could just come down to the station and answer a few questions,â Reese said patiently.
âI'm not going anywhere,â Vivian said. We made it to the living room just in time to see Vivian fixing him with a beady eye. She looked like a dragon.
Reese sighed and scrubbed a hand through his hair. âJust a few,â he wheedled. Vivian caught sight of me over his shoulder and smiled. It was a strange sort of smile, one that made me want to run away screaming. She didn't smile. That was terrifying.
âJust who I was expecting,â she said, satisfied.
Reese turned, an eyebrow raised when he caught sight of me. He caught sight of Taylin too, and something else flashed across his face. I couldn't tell what it was, because it disappeared so fast. Regret, maybe?
âHe says I need to answer more questions,â Vivian said dismissively. âI told him your education is more important.
