Summerbird was the only one still asleep. Miffin scratched at her door, calling out for her to rise and prepare to depart for Offuun.

Her door was flung open by an irritated Elodie, who shushed him. “I was just awakening her. Must you speak with her now?”

Miffin did not need to, but he would not allow this imperious young sprite to send him away. Shushing him, indeed!

“Of course, I must speak with her,” he said haughtily. “I have a message from Treaty. You may have food prepared for her. And the others if you would.”

Elodie’s pale-blue eyes flashed. She leaned closer to him. “You be careful, you griffin. You are ofttimes too heavy-taloned.”

Miffin huffed. Elodie slipped out through her doorway. The griffin entered Summerbird’s bedchamber to find her sitting up, grinning at him.

“Do you realize the two of you act as though you are wed,” she said sweetly.

Miffin froze in mid-step. It took him a moment to realize she was teasing him.

Miffin flew up and seated himself on the end of her bed. Orkey bounded across the bed and pounced on him. Miffin watched the cattue for a moment as she wound her way through his sharp talons before he turned to Summerbird.

“Treaty spoke with me briefly, the last eventide. He told me you must depart today. I suspect he knew you would be reluctant to leave Darkleaf. I must stay here, my dear. I have things to accomplish, and I cannot put them off any longer.”

“What if I need you?” Summerbird asked in a small voice.

“I will fly to you if you call me,” he promised. “Or use a doorway.”

She looked into his eyes a moment longer, then blinked rapidly. “You look so sad. I-I will miss you so much, Miffin.”

Miffin stared down at his talons. “If my eyes are wet, it is because I am not accustomed to furry beings around me.”

The griffin jumped as the small cattue smacked the back of his talon with her tiny, clawed paw. But then she turned to attack his long, magnificent lion’s tail, his slight seemingly forgotten.

Summerbird also collected herself. With a long sigh, she swung her feet over the edge of her bed.

“I have little to take with me,” she said. She shrugged her shoulders. “I wish I could have brought some of my things from Woorn.”

Miffin absently waved toward the wardrobe. “Take whatever you wish from that cabinet, of course, they should fit you—”

Miffin snapped his beak shut, but it was too late. Summerbird pounced as swiftly as her cattue. The griffin almost groaned aloud. She and his carelessness had trapped him and found an opening to discuss the mysterious wardrobe and its contents.

“Whose clothes, are they?” she demanded. “Why do they fit me?” She bent closer and looked him in the eyes. “Whose room was this, Miffin?”

Miffin sighed and looked down at his feet, overwhelmed. Why keep such a secret? It did no good, indeed, not knowing something of her past could do the child harm.

“The room was yours, my dear,” he said morosely.
