A team of professionals had removed Gil from the pool, and a temporary curtain had been set up to block the scene from view while they worked on him. That could not have been a good sign. Security guards had escorted Carrie and Sienna away from the poolside, despite their loud, pleading protests. I heard sirens in the distance. They were getting closer. The music had been cut off and stunned silence among the fans was interrupted only by concerned voices. Everyone was trying to catch a glimpse of what was going on behind the screen. I was with them. I wanted to know what had happened. Was Gil dead? Just thinking it sounded crazy in my mind.
The crowds were held back behind the pool barrier, but I noticed a split as people stepped aside to let someone through. Detective Preston emerged from the herd of people. He easily hopped the barrier and strode along the edge of the pool to the area where the medics were working. I caught his eye as he passed by, and he gave a curt nod of acknowledgement. Cole disappeared behind the screen. What the heck was going on back there?
"This is nuts," Lizzie whispered. "What do you think happened?"
I shook my head. "I have no idea."
It had only been a couple of minutes, but the detective reemerged from behind the privacy screen. Cole's chin dropped nearly to his chest as he looked down and solemnly crossed the event space. I could read his expression. Something terrible had happened to Gil. The detective looked our way and gave the briefest shake of his head.
Lizzie sucked in a breath next to me. "Does that mean what I think it means?"
"You know as much as I do, but judging by the detective's demeanor, things are bad. Very bad."
"Do you think Gil is dead?" Lizzie asked in a hushed tone. I saw Cole pull his phone from his pocket and dial before stepping away from the crowds. If I had to guess, I'd say he was calling the coroner.
The announcer's voice came over the speakers. It was the same guy who'd been announcing all day, but his tone had shifted dramatically. Rather than excited enthusiasm, it sounded like the man was working hard to hold his emotions in check. "Attention, ladies and gentleman. Attention, please. We need everyone to clear the contest zone. Sorry for the inconvenience." He sucked in a sharp breath before continuing. "Free drinks will be handed out over in the stage area." The sound cut out as abruptly as it had begun. Most onlookers knew that something bad had happened on the course, the announcement confirmed that. Despite wanting to stick around and find out what was happening, people began reluctantly moseying toward the stage area. The mention of free drinks had been a good move on the part of the resort.
The seats in our exclusive section began emptying. Lizzie stood and picked up her bag. "Guess we should head that way."
I glanced toward the swarm of people approaching the stage and then back at the mysterious screen.
