“God,” Aimee said, flopping down on an empty deck chair next to Dalia. “I’m going to kill my brother.”

Dalia grinned. “Aimee’s going to be on the news,” she sang.

Aimee handed the sunscreen to Dalia. “Here,” she said, nodding her head toward Rick on the deck below. “Can you? Thanks…ugh, between Rick needing to take care of my every need and my brother needing to make sure I remain celibate—,” She cut herself off, slamming a fist into the seat of the chair. “Ugh!”

“Why don’t we use the stuff I brought instead?” Dalia said, pulling the glass crock out of her bag, a little startled by the sudden shift in Aimee’s temperament. She’d gone from giggling to seething on the flight of stairs to the upper deck.

“Did you see Chuck staring at us?”

“I did.” Dalia rubbed the cocoa butter into her friend’s shoulders, noticing that she’d begun to burn again. “I think you should stay in the shade for a while. This works great, but it isn’t a true sunblock”

“What is his problem?” Aimee was still seething.

“Well, to start—I think he’s realizing that you like Rick.”

“Say that quieter, please. And, so what? None of his business is what.”

“Done,” Dalia said, closing the crock.

Aimee sat back on her chair, groaning. “PMS,” she muttered.

Dalia quirked a brow. “Huh?”

“I must be PMSing,” she said, throwing an arm over her eye. “These mood swings are ridiculous.” She looked over at Dalia, eyes glistening with tears.

Goodness, the dragon said, back inside Dalia’s head. This is no run-of-the-mill mood swing.

“Oh, sweetie.” Dalia handed Aimee an ice-cold water bottle. “That sucks. Drink this, and just relax here with me for a while. I think you’ve partied yourself out.”

“I feel like I could take a nap for a lifetime.”

“Then do that. Nothing exciting is happening, anyway.”

“Nothing except for Emiko.”

“Ugh. Don’t say her name.” Dalia made a face.

“Somebody needs to tell her this isn’t an audition for ‘Girls Gone Wild’.” Aimee’s eyes drifted overboard, where Emiko and her harem of girls were topless—and then some—on an oversized raft that was tied to drift along with the boat. She snorted. “They’re all going to need a round of antibiotics; some of those girls are nasty.”

“Don’t watch,” Dalia said. “It’s what they want.”

“Yeah,” Aimee sighed, closing her eyes and settling into the lounge chair. “You’re right.”

Rick appeared, peeking around the corner of the stairs. He waved to catch Dalia’s attention, then stepped back, hiding.

I wonder what that’s all about? Celestra asked.

Let’s find out. Dalia stood up. She adjusted the deck umbrella, making sure the shade covered her friend before turning to go see Rick.

“Where are you going?” Aimee mumbled.

“Bathroom,” Dalia lied. “Will you be okay here for a few minutes?”

“Yep,” came the slurred answer. “Jus’ takin’ a nap.”

Oh, dear, the dragon said. If only I could stay here.

Yes, Dalia answered. I wish you could, too.
