The tour bus was painted with pseudo-occult rock band nonsense on the outside but decorated like a little girl’s bedroom on the inside. The driver’s seat was covered in a fluffy pink seat cover. The steering wheel was drenched in gold glitter.

“Wow,” Slater said.

“We used it as a mobile nursery for a while,” explained Donne, the werewolf with the mohawk. “We didn’t have time to redecorate when we used it to make our exodus. Need a hand up?”

“I’ve got her,” Slater said.

He lifted me and my chair into the bus effortlessly.

Being able to see the entire length of it didn’t do much to dent my surprise. We’d found the other tarot witches, and they were riding in Rage’s old tour bus. The inside had been retrofitted with decorative throws, stuffed animals, Christmas lights, and gauze. There were pink curtains at the back. Everything was pink, in fact.

Even the woman who was sitting on the back bench, surrounded by other women sitting at her feet—she was wearing pink too. She was a red-haired, rosy-cheeked vision of glowing femininity.

Not exactly what I expected to see in the apocalypse.

“Make some room for our new friend,” the pink woman said. The witches climbed off of the floor so that I could move up the aisle. Chad leaped over the benches to flop next to the pretty pink girl, looping his arm over her shoulders.

“This is my mate, Leah,” Donne said, lumbering up the bus more slowly.

Slater smiled as he shook Leah’s hand, letting all those soft parts shine through his mask. “It’s a pleasure to meet the woman who could rope my brother.”

Donne ran a hand over his mohawk and ducked his head, but not before I saw he looked pleased.

“Oh my goodness! Is this your mate?” Leah asked, turning to me.

“I’m Samita Madin. I got the Death card. I am not mated to anyone, but Slater and I are good friends.” Such good friends that we had made a baby together and shared truly incredible sex once every five months.

Leah and I shook hands, too. Heat jolted through me at the touch of skin against skin.

That was the feeling of grabbing hold of charged electrical wires and becoming part of the circuit.

Power.

Leah might have been the most powerful witch I had ever met, to such an extreme degree that my whole body sang with her magic. I heard music very much like what had emanated from making love to Slater.

“The Hierophant,” she said. I hadn’t needed to ask.

That card indicated a surrender to religious authority. “That must have been an interesting journey.”

“They all are. Sit with me?” Leah gestured to an empty space at the end of her bench.

I maneuvered to her side.

The doors shut and the bus jolted. It was being driven by another woman—one of the witches who had been sitting with Leah when I entered.

“The Emperor. Justice. The World. The Star.” Leah nodded at her companions in turn. “And that’s where we’re keeping everything we’ve got at the moment.” She gestured to a shelf.
