CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Two days later, Napier quietly made bail and was released. Although his passport had been confiscated, he had a friend take him to his apartment so that he could pack some things and get out of town. In less than an hour, Napier had a suitcase filled with as much clothing and personal items as it would hold. He put some cash and personal papers in his briefcase. He handed the keys to the apartment to his friend to clear it out for him later. Then he got into the friendâs car for the trip to the airport.
With the friend driving, they started down the street toward the boulevard that would take them to the freeway. When they made a left turn onto a cross street, they needed to go just two more blocks to get to Crenshaw Boulevard. At that moment, a gray pickup truck pulled up alongside the driver, and a man on the passenger side with a pistol motioned him to pull over.
âWho the hellâs this motherfucker with a gun?â the friend said to Napier.
Napier took a look over at the truck. âPull over to the side but donât get blocked in,â he said. âLeave the engine running. When the truck pulls in behind us, be ready to hit the gas and get the fuck out of here.â
Napierâs friendâs eyes got wide. âThat sonofabitch looks like heâs going shoot us!â he said, looking back at the truck, that was now directly behind them.
âHe wants me, not you,â Napier said. âNow do like I said.â
The friend complied. The gray pickup pulled in behind them, and a thin Latino with a shock of black hair and droopy eyes got out carrying a pistol in his hand. He walked toward Napierâs passengerâs side window. Napier watched each step in the side view mirror while slumped down in the seat. When the man with the gun was just a few feet away, Napier said, âHit it, now!â His friend stepped on the gas pedal and drove off with tires squealing. The gunman took quick aim and squeezed off a shot at Napier. Napier was still down in the seat, and the bullet smashed into the passenger side mirror.
âKeep moving!â Napier said. His friend sped the car out into traffic on Crenshaw Boulevard, heading toward the 105 freeway.
The gunman raced back to the pickup, and he and the driver gave chase. They were able to catch up to Napierâs friendâs car and follow it onto the 105 freeway toward the airport.
Los Angeles International Airport had several separate terminals that were located very close together, with two loops running between themâone on top for departures and one underneath for arrivals. Inside the loops across from the terminal buildings were parking structures.
âWhat are we gonna do now?â the friend asked as they arrived at the beginning of the departure side level. Perspiration was dripping down his forehead.
Napier carefully checked outside the rear windshield to track the pickup. âHead onto the departure level and follow it around,â he said.
