Chapter 17

My morning wasn’t my own. RK got hold of me and requested I attend a lecture. I couldn’t say I was busy with the Clarks since I’d promised to stay away. There wasn’t much to do other than relax by the pool and have a frosty drink or two.

“Sure!” I hadn’t forgiven her for not letting Ashley travel with us. “That sounds a lot better than a dip in the pool or a gossip session with Babs.”

My sarcasm rolled over her. She told me it was educational and would give me a lot of useful information about Dubai. The speaker was an expert who had boarded in Mumbai.

Apart from outright rebellion, I didn’t have a choice so I gave in.

The lecture was in a small room on Deck 4, next to where the bingo tournament was being conducted. I had bittersweet memories of the place. It had been a while since I caught up on who was top of the leaderboard now. Mickey would know, of course. Talking to Mickey could wait. Things weren’t hunky dory with us after last night. We hadn’t quarreled, not openly. But we hadn’t parted on a very friendly note either.

The talk had already started when I went in. Dim lights in the aisles guided me to an empty seat. I’m always surprised at the number of people who attend these talks. My theory is they didn’t get a chance to study or go to college and are making up for it now. I mean, who wants to sit in a freezing classroom when they could be enjoying a cocktail in the warm sun, gazing at endless vistas of the blue sea?

Need I say the lecture was boring? Some speakers have the knack of involving the audience and making it interactive. This guy wasn’t one of them. He droned on and on, flipping slide after slide. A woman behind me let out a loud snore. My mind wandered. Naturally it went to the topic uppermost in my mind.

It had been two days since Mary died but it hadn’t sunk in. There were times when I thought I would come across her anywhere on the ship. I felt sympathy for the Clarks. They had been hit by a one two punch. If Sharon was guilty, they would never be able to put it behind them.

Was I doing everything possible to help Sharon? I didn’t have a viable suspect. Richard was the top contender, being the spouse. In every detective story or movie, the police always go after the spouse first, right? And Richard would get his hands on an insane amount of wealth. Money can make the noblest of us turn. Janet had brought some new information to light. According to her, Richard targeted Mary for money. That whole story of love at first sight was a fib. Mary might have felt it but Richard had seen dollar signs.

How long could a man pretend though. They had been married for fifty years. Fifty! Had he
