Back in the Tahoe, the heat blasted around our feet. The first tiny flakes from the oncoming snowstorm drifted onto the windshield. Instead of driving, Tonya sat with her hands on the steering wheel, and I could tell something was bothering her.

I put a hand on her knee. “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head. “Nothing. It’s just…that picture of the Vixens stirred up some bad memories. They wreaked a lot of havoc back in the day.”

I nodded. “Before I found Victoria’s body, I was remembering that poor girl she humiliated at graduation.”

“Melissa Masterson. Perfectly nice person. Moved out of town as soon as she graduated. She didn’t deserve all that bullying.”

“None of them did.” The trace of an image flickered around the edges of my memory—a girl sobbing, the Vixens circling around her. But it drifted away before I could capture it.

Tonya tapped the wheel. “Most of The Vixens were decent enough at one time. Kimberly, for example. I can’t help but think she—and most of the others—wouldn’t have turned so vicious if Victoria hadn’t energized their baser instincts.”

She finally put the car into gear and glanced at me. “Ah, well. These melancholy ruminations are best left to another time. Preferably a snowy evening at your parents’ lodge with a mug of mulled wine.”

As she pulled onto the street and prepared to make a U-turn, I made a decision. “Wait,” I said. “Instead of taking me home, can you drop me off at the high school?”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “Why?”

“I’m ready to figure this out once and for all. To do that, I need to eliminate as many suspects as possible. Jessica Fannon would be a good start.” I looked across the console. “You’re friendly with her, aren’t you? Will you call and wrangle me an invitation?”

“You’re like a dog with a bone, sweet potato,” Tonya said. But she pressed the Bluetooth button on her dashboard and made the call.
