CHAPTER 16

“Why are we waiting here?” Wynona whispered to Rascal. They were back at the station and Chief Ligurio had put them in an interrogation room, only to leave a few moments later.

Rascal scratched his three-day-old beard. “I think they’re bringing Callista in here to talk with her again.”

“Oh.” Wynona tapped her fingers on her knee. “And the chief?”

Rascal shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

The answer to her question came quickly, however, when Chief Ligurio burst back in with a mug in his hand.

Unconsciously, Wynona leaned back. She knew vampires needed blood to survive, and those who lived in the cities were quite civilized about it, but that didn’t mean it didn’t churn her stomach just a touch. Though the recognition of that made Wynona feel bad. In the paranormal world, different species all had different diets. Why should one disgust her more than the others?

Taking a deep breath, Wynona forced her uncharitable feelings aside and tried to act as if she had been waiting patiently, though inside she was squirming with eagerness to get this over with.

Chief Ligurio didn’t seem to notice her at all as he sat down at the table in the middle of the room and opened a folder. He seemed to be studying its contents while they all waited for Callista to arrive.

When the door opened again, Wynona straightened in her seat. Callista was being led in with officers on either side of her. Her hands were still wrapped in a hag thread and Wynona wanted to scold them for keeping her locked up when they had full evidence she was innocent. She bit her tongue, however. There was a time and a place to pick a fight and right now wasn’t it.

“Ms. Umbra,” Chief Ligurio said in a more pleasant than usual voice. “Have a seat, please.”

Callista frowned, but complied.

“Your hands.”

Callista looked up at the officer at her side and held up her hands. Her eyes widened when he removed the thread. She slowly lowered her hands, rubbing the skin as if she was hurt, though the skin wasn’t red at all.

“We found your sister,” Chief Ligurio said carefully.

Wynona stiffened. There was something in the edge of his tone and she wanted to know where he was going with this.

Callista relaxed and smiled. “No wonder you brought me in here. You know about our plan.”

Wynona frowned. Plan? What was Callista talking about?

Callista looked around. “So, am I free to go then?”

Chief Ligurio leaned forward on the desk. “What exactly do you think we found, Ms. Umbra?”

Callista blinked several times. “I thought you said you found Indigo. Didn’t she tell you about our plan?”

“You told us point blank a couple of days ago that you killed your sister,” Chief Ligurio pointed out. “Yet now you’re speaking as if we should have found her alive.”

Callista’s face drained of color and she swayed slightly. “She wasn’t alive?”

The chief slowly shook his head. “Her body was picked up about an hour ago at the foot of Spell Summit.”

“Indigo’s dead?” Callista rasped, as if she couldn’t really grasp what the chief was saying.
