Chapter Thirteen

“Camille, do you feel like a walk?”

“Have you lost your mind? What did you just tell me the detective said?”

“Not to go out alone.” Maddie answered like a scolded child and not so sure she hadn’t lost her mind.

“I believe he also said to stay home tonight.”

“About that…”

Camille wagged a finger as her father did when he wanted to make a point. “No, Maddie. We are not going anywhere. There is now a murderer and a kidnapper out there, and you have no idea if you’re their next target or not.”

“I understand that it’s scary,” Maddie said soothingly, “but I promise I have no intention of being a target for anyone.”

“Well, I don’t know her, but I’d lay odds that Dani didn’t have any desire to be one either. Look how that turned out when she strolled around Manhattan right after she upset that horrible man.”

Maddie shuddered as she considered Dani’s abduction. “She had no idea he was going to hold a grudge to that extent.”

Camille crossed her arms and tapped a foot. “I rest my case.”

“Fine. I won’t go outside to check on the car right across the road from here that has a suspicious person in it looking up at this apartment as we speak.”

“Do not try to convince me to go against my better judgement.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Hmmph.” Camille fought the urge for a few more seconds before coming to the window and hiding behind the curtain next to Maddie.

“I see the shop on the corner is open still. They have decent ice cream, don’t they?”

Camille glared at her. “They do.”

“We’d be there and back in five minutes.” Maddie assured her, but it looked like she’d played all her cards and lost.

“Five minutes and that’s it. I’ll get my coat.”

Maddie hid a smile as Camille stomped to the bedroom. Shutting the window, Maddie shrugged back into her coat and wrapped a scarf around her neck while waiting by the door. Camille might be unimpressed with her guest right now, but they were unable to stay annoyed with each other for long, so Maddie knew she would get over it. Appreciating how she was always willing to help her, Maddie would make sure her friend stayed safe.

Besides, it was probably something innocent like someone waiting for a friend. All she wanted was to get a look at the occupant in that car so she could give the detective a lead via the license plate or a description if necessary.

They came out the front door arm in arm and crossed the road several cars down from the suspect. Maddie deliberately didn’t look at the car until they neared it. Suddenly, the engine roared into life. The car swerved out into the middle of the road and shot around the next corner on the right.

They ran as fast as they could, arriving in time to see the taillights disappear around yet another corner. Maddie slapped a hand on her thigh. “I guess that means they were watching me and followed the detective and I here.
