Chapter Fifteen
âAn antique is anything old with class.â
--John Bartlett
The grandfather clock in the corner of the shop was chiming ten oâclock when Lucy came through the door. C.A. was working on the computer at the counter, while Mattie was nearby showing Linda some of the estate jewelry they had on display in a glass case. Linda tried on silver bracelets and made appreciative noises, and Mattie slipped an emerald ring on her finger and held it up for admiration. âI should just buy this for myself. Iâve been wanting it ever since C.A. brought it back from that estate auction in Lancaster. I donât need a man to buy me pretty things. Why donât I just treat myself?â
âYes. Why not?â Linda said, then flipped the little tag on the back and whistled. âMaybe thatâs why.â
Mattie squinted at it. âOh, yeah. I forgot there was another zero on there. That is exactly why I will put it back.â
Lucy twirled her keyring on her finger, took the ring from Mattie, slipped it back on its little velvet post, and then handed Mattie a different one with a turquoise stone set in an intricately detailed silver setting. âThis looks more like you than that one anyway, and has one less zero.â
Mattie tried it on and smiled. She winked at Lucy. âYou are so right.â
Closing the laptop, Carol Ann glanced over and nodded at her mother. âThat does look good on you. Just leave it on, Iâll give it to you for your birthday.â
Mattie beamed. âThank you, honey.â
âSeeâ Linda said, âsomeone that loves you did buy you a ring, Matilda.â
âThis is true.â Mattie held up her hand to the light, turning it back and forth to admire her new ring.
Secretly happy that her birthday shopping for her mother was unexpectedly finishedâand that Mattie seemed happierâC.A. got out the receipt book so she could write up her bill for the ring.
Lucy shut the display case and locked it with a tiny key on her keyring as she shot a sideways look at Carol Ann. âSpeaking of loved ones, any word from Steven lately?â
Carol Ann shrugged as she continued to write out the receipt. âWe may have talked recently. Iâm giving him the space heâs asked for and doing some thinking of my own.â
âWell, thatâs sounding a little more mature and promising.â Lucy cocked her head and fluttered her eyes. âMaybe youâll work up the nerve to see if he wants to go steady by the end of the school year.â
Putting down the pen and straightening to her full height, C.A. looked down her aquiline nose at Lucy. âI will have you know that I told Steven just last night that I love him. So, you can keep your petty comments to yourself, thank you.â
Lucyâs grin faltered and she dropped the keys onto the floor, while Mattie stared at her daughter with an open mouth. Linda looked from them to C.A. with a confused expression on her face. âIsnât this the man youâve been dating for a while now?â
