Mailing Pieces
No matter how good a photographer you are, you will not have a chance to prove yourself until you make such a good impression that a client is willing to look at your portfolio and hire you for a shoot. Mailings in all their guisesâpostcards, promotional posters (covered below), even sourcebook reprints (see chapter 8)âare an excellent and cost-effective way to make yourself known.
Probably the most frequently mailed promotional piece for photographers is the postcard. What can you do with such a small format? A tremendous amount. You have several elements to work withâthe choice and cropping of the image, layout, type, color, patterns.
Designing a postcard is a challenge, but one you should welcome because it offers such striking rewards. You (and perhaps a designer) can create, within the âlimitationsâ of a postcardâs size and proportions, a design that opens eyes to the value of your work and opens doors to your success as a photographer.
Modern Postcard, located at 1675 Faraday Avenue, Carlsbad, California, provides nice quality, and their low prices make it easy for a photographer to create attractive pieces for use in monthly mailings. The people at Modern Postcard are very easy to work with if you follow their rules. For example, on the front of the card they print color with a glossy finish, and on the back matte black and white; they will print images and text on the back of the card, with a maximum number of words for each card size. Call their toll-free number (800-959-8365) or go to their website, at www.modernpostcard.com.
The standard-size postcard produced by Modern Postcardâ4.25 à 6 inchesâis the largest postcard you can mail for the first-class postcard rate. If you want type on the back, Modern Postcard will typeset up to 50 words. The deluxe card (6 à 8.5 inches) provides more room for a larger image or multiple images; it mails at first-class letter rates, but you can also send it by bulk rate. Modern Postcardâs Sumo Size⢠postcard, which measures 6 à 11 inches, is the largest card you can mail at regular postage letter rates. They also can do a custom job for youâfor example, they can produce several different formats and use different types of paper; they can create scored tri-fold cards and custom sizes, like 8 à 10 inches or 8 à 12 inches.
