Aubrey sees herself as the experienced leader who knows what it takes for the group to be successful. Yet, her closed mindset causes her to get defensive and shut down Beca’s suggestion for doing something innovative. In fact, because of Aubrey’s closed-mindedness and need to be seen as being right, Beca leaves the group. After a period of time, the group realizes Beca’s talent adds value to the group. She comes back, and with her help, they win the collegiate national championship.
While Pitch Perfect is fictional, I do not think interactions like this are uncommon. Some examples include parents who fail to listen to their children and instead respond by saying, “Because I am you mother, that’s why!” Perhaps someone gets defensive after receiving constructive criticism from their spouse instead of trying to see their own blind spots. Or managers are quick to shoot down the ideas and suggestions of their teams. This leaves me wondering how many times we pass up ideas that will make us more successful because we are too stubborn and closed-minded to see that our way of thinking and doing things could be improved.
Our closed/open mindsets play a most significant role in our lives: they impact the quality of our decisions. We must recognize that our success is based upon our effectiveness in decision-making. In The Noticer Returns, Andy Andrews writes, “A person’s long-term level of success or failure—as an employee, a manager, or an owner—in any part of business will be greatly determined by the quality and accuracy of his decisions.” Andrews goes on to suggest that if we can make better decisions, we will engage in better actions, produce better results, enhance our reputation, and ultimately drive success across our life, work, and leadership.
