‘Oh! I see a likeness coming!’: Portrait of a Lady by John Hoppner, oil on canvas, 1789

Giovanni Boldini, Portrait of a Lady, oil on canvas, 1913: probably executed in the intervals between the artist’s amorous pursuit of the sitter around the studio

The portraits painted by modernist artists are less concerned with flattery and creating a moneyed look than with formal experimentation and psychological penetration. And there is one category of portraiture where psychological penetration has always been most prized: that is the artist’s self-portrait. The market values particularly highly the self-analysis and revelation that goes into an artist’s painted reportage of himself. This is the painter stripped down to his own essentials. This is his self-memorial. The commercial assumption, generally justified, is that the artist is his own most demanding sitter.
